A pretty dull movie

I know The Asylum is known for cheap low budget knock-off mock-busterso I didn't really expect much going in. I had also heard that this wastheir best movie in the catalog so I gave it a chance. Hopes weremoderate that it would be decent until the first zombie fight.*********************SPOILERS****************************************A zombie that fights back? OK fine maybe he was still turning but thatfirst encounter already turned me off. The fake make-up, wigs, mustaches and beards were all laughably fake looking, especially thegenerals. There is NO sense of urgency when they fight the zombies, andit even seems like the zombies are scared of them last half of themovie. At least 3 zombies noticeably back away, or take their timegetting to their victims. During the moments leading up to the end itwas basically a zombie killing spree as the zombies apparently sleepuntil a really loud noise wakes them up. ******************************ENDSPOILERS******************************I can go on but really, there's not point. I understand its a lowbudget cash in project like all the other movies from The Asylum andyou can't really expect much, which I didn't and even with the lowexpectations I had I couldn't be prepared for such a bad movie.

Yes, Asylum makes one good movie.

Yes, it's a cheap, z-grade rip-off of Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter. But it's a fun, cheap, z-grade rip-off. While yes, there's some badspecial effects like PC graphic CGI blood. But the acting is honestly, the best an Asylum has been grace with. With Bill Oberst JR. literallybecoming Abe Lincoln. Now is it better than it's big budgetcounterpart, probably not technically and budget wise. But it is a goodenough movie on it's own two feet. Which is something at least good tosay for a usually crummy Asylum movie. I recommend it to be rented, arare recommendation I make for Asylum movies. They may some promise inthe future.

Okay,Bill Oberst,Jr. Just is Perfection in the Stove Pipe Hat !

Written & Directed by: Richard Schenkman Fantastic movie fromTheasylum, Really one of the best that studio has ever done and seemswith Oberst & Schenkman had two genius at their craft allowed tofulfill the novel promise.Filmed in Savannah,Georgia probably with a lot of Civil Warre-en-actors as extras and supporting,It very pretty on location andrings authentic in accents and carriage.Bill Oberst,Jr. was felt to be a good actor when we interviewed himelsewhere and now after A L vs Z,Wow…He is even cooler of a a cat. There is a lot of thrown in historical characters,Given a lot to do intheir scenes-Stonewall Jackson ,John Wilkes-Booth, Teddy Roosevelt andwas Pat Garret hinted at ??? Great screenplay,Awesome cast and timingagain is perfect !

Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play?

The Asylum has it's little niche. Doing bad ripoffs of big Hollywoodfilms on the hope stupid people will buy them from Netflix, Blockbusteror Redbox not knowing what they are. The term is "Mockbuster",and theAsylum is the master of it.Because someone decided to create a movie called "AbrahamLincoln-Vampire Hunter", the folks at Asylum decided that the GreatEmancipator didn't have enough people disgracing his memory.Lincoln leads a team of Secret Service Agents to fight a Zombieoutbreak in Savannah Georgia, which also includes running into PatGarret, Teddy Roosevelt as a child, Stonewall Jackson and John WilkesBooth. Other than the name dropping, the bad Civil War Re-enactmentsand other contempt for the audience's intellect, this is a typicalcheap zombie movie.I should point out the makeup work is truly awful. You couldn't tellthe protagonists from the Zombies without a scorecard and some of thefake beards were laughable (Especially the aforementioned StonewallJackson.) It's been 40+ years since "Night of the Living Dead", come up with somenew ideas, cheap film makers.Sometimes Asylum films can be little gems of people trying, andsometimes they can be inadvertently funny. This film was neither.

Better than you'd think....

Last year,i heard about the film about an ex-prez,fighting vampire,s.Ithought,"why not".(it was really more like "w.t.f. ? )A few monthsago,a friend that works as an editor, told me about a film that soundedlike the above movie.I told him i,d heard of it,even here inArkansas, but i heard it was vampires. So,that's how i found thisflick.Well, for starters, its better than you,d think.I don,t care a lotabout U.S. history, but this was a fresh idea, and a zombie movie-no easytask.Asylum,s biggest looking movie to date, they went all out on thelook of this one,and it works. The gore was there, the zombie,s a bitfresh for my taste, but o.k. . All in All,i wont say it,s a badmovie,'cause it,s not.The guy playing Lincon was really good, and therest were decent. You could do worse.Washington as a ghost hunter....BenFranklin as a ghost-buster....uh oh,i may have just made this wholething worse....

typical The Asylum

Here we have it again, The Asylum ripping off another blockbuster. Thistime Abraham Lincoln: Vampire hunter (2012). And by now you all knowwhat you can expect from The Asylum. Most of their flicks are full ofcheap CGI and bad acting. This is no exception. Some can act and Abraham Lincoln (Bill OberstJr.) was believable but others just couldn't act and them wearing fakebeards didn't make it much better. The zombies looked rather good but still were missing a few things, their clothes were all nicely cleaned. But their faces were okay.Still, there aren't that many zombies to see, only towards the end wedo have a horde involving children. When the zombies are being killedit doesn't become gory. The blood and beheadings are done CGI wise, andsome CGI is really awful. When zombies are attacking people and gettingthem to the ground nothing is shown like in those good old zombieflicks. No tearing apart of corpses, no intestines being eaten. Of course being a low budget it all takes place in one place aso-called fort. Inside there was a lot of talking which didn't addtowards the suspense. The end you could see it coming from miles away. Gore 1/5 Nudity 0/5 Effects 2/5 Story 2/5 Comedy 0/5

Disgusting but Lincoln's finest days

I represent a sizable minority of motion picture viewers - until"Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies" I had never seen a zombie movie. I hadcaught the unavoidable snippets on television but that was all. Itlooked disgusting to me. It still does, but when a good friend loanedme "Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies" because of my odd interest in 19thcentury Noth American history I decided to watch it. This'alternatative history' treatment of events is actually rather good andwould have been better without the zombie gore but then it would havebeen a different movie. If I discount my disgust with zombies there wasmuch to admire in this film. The actor playing Lincoln did an excellentjob. The role of General Jackson caught the man's character and, whilehis death in our time line was sad in the movie's it was a credit thethat devout Christian man. The surprising ending was quite superb butwhat most struck me was the unobtrusive and lovely music in thebackground. Of course the movie is flawed by it's low budget but it isfar better than many more costly productions.

So bad I loved it...

OK, first off, it's a movie called Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies. If youreally expected something serious or good, the title was warningenough.I guess I was just in the mood for some stupidity. I gave it a 3 of 10,but I have to say, even though it was bad, there were moments I reallydid laugh out loud. For example, when the little kid is sitting on AbeLincoln's shoulders and telling him to move left and right so he canshoot zombies on the other side of a brick wall that Lincoln can't seeover... Hysterical. The kid's shooting a big old musket, and there isno smoke, no recoil, and he never has to reload it! Just BANG, BANG,BANG... Dead Zombies. To me, that embodied the whole movie. If you can look past such obviousproblems with having reality get in the way of the movie, you might geta good laugh out of it. I mean, after all, it is a zombie movie...There are two types of zombie movies in my book, the ones where you go"ok, here's the crazy scenario that you might have to face zombies"(like I Am Legend or 28 Days Later), and then there is the "who theheck cares, it's a Zombie movie, let's get goofy." This is the ladder, and as such, it's funny as heck. But, even for the ladder, it does move a little slow, it's noZombieland... So, I give it a 3.

I like this movie

At first I was a little wary of this movie, seeing that they have amovie with Pres. Lincoln hunting vampires this movie was not bad infact it was pretty good. The acting could have been better, but all inall it was good to watch. It had all the elements that make a goodzombie movie.Blood, gore, and of course zombies. It was also fun towatch the Pres. go out and take charge and get his zombie kill skillsgoing rather than sit in his office and give directions. The story linewas good and well written. The locations were on point with just alittle bit of modern day materials. But was also a good history lessonif you know your US History you will see for your self.

Linc Looses Cut Off Point

The world of B rated flicks has been around since the days of Edward D.Wood Jr. It is acceptable to make a film with a working budget of$150,000, having a cast of more than ten and a storyline that tries tomake sense. It is also accepted that there will be a script with peoplewho are being paid as actors to play the parts and interpret the lines. However, this is not the best example of this genre of film. The story tries to follow the historical facts after the Battle ofGettysburg; it uses the characters that are well known through outhistory, yet, with the best will in the world, having a zombie in thesame room/area as Abraham Lincoln does stretch it a bit. Having thoseZombies evenly spaced over a field in a long shot makes more of amockery especially while famous historical characters argue over whowill die!The acting notwithstanding, the make up (when you see StonewallJackson's beard, you will understand) is really a disappointment. Thezombies must have gone to 'Little Miss Messy's House Of ChildhoodMakeup -Artists'...The music has been stolen from every B movie back tothe 1950's. The camera work is straight from the pamphlet, 'How to be aMovie Director in Five Easy Steps'! (Where were the over the shouldershots?)Now for the good parts, for every movie has them: This movie tries tomake a huge film with a small budget. The director and actors must havetaken a small sum for their work and for that I commend them. One question, if you had chosen to make the film without piggybackingon 'Lincoln vs the Vampires', would Asylum have said yes????Nest time, be true to the film.

Too Boring to Watch

Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies (2012) * (out of 4)The Asylum's "mockbuster" of ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER findsHonest Abe (Bill Oberst, Jr.) having to fight some Confederate zombies. If that seems light on a plot description then you might want to stayaway from this film because that's pretty much all there is. You know, many people attack companies like The Asylum for not having any freshor original ideas of their own but I've always given them a fair shot.I mean, if we were in the 50s or 70s then the drive-in would have beenplaying these types of movies each and every weekend. With that said, the biggest sin any movie like this could make is to be boring andthat's exactly what has happened here. I think there could have been somany interesting ideas that could have been done in regards to Lincolngoing up against zombies. Just take a look at how many lives were lostin the war on Lincoln's command, a film about them coming back fromrevenge would be interesting. The dead from the war coming back to helpwin it could have been interesting. What we got here is just downrightboring on a number of levels but I think the film was just too silly tobe taken serious and it wasn't nearly campy enough to keep youentertained. As you'd expect, the CGI effects were all extremely cheapand the fake gore was just painful. The performances weren't too badand while Oberst gave a good performance I'd say I still had a hardtime believing he was really the president (unlike the real movie). Itis funny to note that even though this came out a month before the"real" movie, this here actually featured several scenes that werequite similar so I don't know if that was just a coincidence or what.Either way, ABRAHAM LINCOLN VS. ZOMBIES is a complete bust and notworth watching even with a free rental.

Not trashy enough to be fun, not good enough to be serious.

Okay, so my expectations weren't sky-high. I knew this was a shamelesscash-in flick, made to make the most of the coming big-budgetAbe-vampire-slasher movie. First of all, never mind the silly premise -as one reviewer has already pointed out, when you rent a zombie flickyou are by definition suspending disbelief. The story too is engagingenough. It's got everything you need... political intrigue, racism, hookers, old love affairs. It even has some not-very-thinly-veiledhistorical character references and in jokes. Even the productionvalues are pretty good for a low budget production despite the verymixed abilities of the cast. No, where this film falls down is that itsimply doesn't deliver in the way that any decent zombie movie must...blood'n'guts. There just aren't any. Sure we see the occasional headflying around, but where are the intestines? Where are the broomhandles through the face? There's also no self-aware comedy value, savefor one scene where Lincoln shouts 'emancipate this' as he lops thehead off another unfortunate zombie. So, my suggestion is avoid unlessyou really are a die-hard zombie fan that absolutely has to see everyzombie film, good or bad.

Don't give up the day job Mr Lincoln.

Henry Ford said that history is bunk and this film certainly lives upto this premise. In 60 years as a film fan I don't think I've ever seensuch a load of old cobblers,on the other hand it was strangelyentertaining, laugh out loud funny with a genuinely chilling climax. Here we have Abraham Lincoln seeing off zombies having already sortedout the vampires in a previous film. What's next, cursed Egyptianmummies, werewolves or even helping Dr Who to sort out the Daleks.Abraham Lincoln himself was fond of telling a tall story so I think hewould have been quite amused at the idea. Not going to dwell on the socalled plot too much but a film that depicts Lincoln,StonewallJackson,Pat Garrett,a young Teddy Roosevelt (bully for you son)Lincoln's ex girlfriend Mary Owens and A.N.Other (I'm not giving thisone away) joining forces at Fort Pulaski to destroy zombies showsimagination at least. The ending is quite startling, the more discerningviewer might suss it out but it certainly caught me on the hop. How canone rate such a film, one for being such a load of old rubbish or tenfor the sheer cheek and audacity and the laugh aloud moments.I think Iwill rate it somewhere in the middle and add an extra star for BillOberst Junior's convincing take on Lincoln. Was it just my imaginationor did he sound very like Robert Duvall? What the heck give it anotherstar for good old Stonewall Jackson's joke shop beard.

The Missing Lincoln!!!

Actor Bill Oberst, Jr., wields a scythe with devastating consequencesin "Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies" as America's sixteenth U.S. Presidentwho harvests the heads of the undead. Of course, "The Man from Earth"director Richard Schenkman's direct-to-video release is an obviousknock-off of "Wanted" director Timur Bekmambetov's outstandingbiographical horror epic "Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter." Instead ofbloodsucking vampire adversaries, the eponymous hero tangles withflesh-feasting zombies. Although the notorious Asylum Entertainmentproduced this low-budget creeper, "Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies"maintains a straight-face throughout its brisk 90-minutes despiteamateurish acting by some supporting players. Zombies shuffle in byscores with pasty, cadaverous-white faces, zoned-out eyeballs, butthere is nothing scary about the action that remains more outlandishthan campy. The typical Asylum release is usually like food that youcannot digest, but this one is the exception to the rule. "AbrahamLincoln Vs. Zombies" is a palatable effort, flawed by an anachronism ortwo. Essentially, Schenkman has forged a Civil War era "Night of theLiving Dead" that takes place at historic Fort Pulaski on the Georgiacoast near Savannah. Based on a story by "Jill and Jack" scribe Karl T.Hirsch and "Starkweather's" J. Lauren Proctor, Schenkman has penned athoroughly predictable screenplay that has Lincoln leading a suicidalmission to the fort after disturbed survivor returns, spewingunbelievable tales about the inhabitants of Fort Pulaski. Eventually, this raving lunatic turns into a zombie! Abraham Lincoln knowseverything he needs to know about zombies so he is prepared to lead. The protagonist had to slay his own mother after she had been bitten byanother zombie.Mind you, "Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies" ranks as above-average Asylumfare, but it cannot compare with the special effects driven "AbrahamLincoln Vampire Hunter." Whereas the latter movie dealt with Lincoln'slife between the time that he saw a vampire bite his mother and thebattle of Gettysburg, the former doesn't let history get into theirway. The producers have violated Civil War chronology because the Uniontook the fort about a year before Lincoln and his men show up. Thezombies aren't the usual variety. "Abraham Lincoln VS. Zombies" changesthem. These zombies can take naps, and Lincoln and his cohorts do thebest to let the zombies sleep. The best joke has Lincoln handing a longstick to a young Telly Roosevelt and recommending that he walk softlywith it. Excellent location lensing at Fort Pulaski, Oberst'sfirst-rate portrayal of Lincoln, and a showdown where Confederates andUnion soldiers fight as one makes this imitative opus entertaining inits own right. "Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies" was produced for paltry$150-thousand compared with the whopping $70-million that 20th CenturyFox spent on "Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter."

B Movie, but a little better

OK- So having read the previews of a pretty good Abraham Lincoln zombiemovie a little while ago, I was surprised to see it available on mylocal DVD kiosk. Perhaps it went straight to DVD? No-turns out therewere TWO Abe Lincoln Zombie movies released recently. This was NOT thegoo done. This is not a bad movie if you can suffer through some badacting and some badly thought out writing. The actor playing Lincolnwas OK (reminded me of Lloyd Bridges a little). The actors playing MaryOwens and Garret the reb soldier were good as well. The rest of thecast was b-movie material. The overall premise was promising, but theplot suffered faults from the start. You would think that with all thezombie movies that have been made, the writers would have taken intoaccount some basic things that the audience knows and the charactersshould recognize pretty quickly (granted this movie introduces theearliest origination of zombies, but don't they all?). The charactersmake dumb mistakes in their plans and in executing them which kind ofkill the movie. The camera work is pretty good (but the editor couldhave done a better job editing some of the early scenes- ie too muchwalking) and made it a little brisker. Overall, it wasn't a waste oftime, and was enjoyable despite its faults.

This was a LOT more fun than I expected it to be. Spoilers.

In a film that is this low budget you know there are going to beproblems and deficiencies. But as cheap zombie flicks go this one had alot of fun bits. Somebody actually CARED about the screenplay. Therewere parts that were actually clever.I loved it that the little boy joining the group was Teddy Roosevelt. Ihad to look it up. Teddy would have been 7 around that time, so it ispossible for him to have encountered Lincoln and the zombies. And ofcourse Lincoln inadvertently gave Teddy one of his trademark lines. There were plenty of other historical references scattered throughoutthe film. Most teen viewers probably won't get them. I have a teenagerwho just finished studying the Civil War in high school. Not possiblefor him to get it with the education he got. (sigh) Maybe read KillingLincoln before reading this. It will give a lot of context to the namesand locations. There was actually a scene lifted right out of Hamlet! It gave me agood 5 minutes worth of giggles. And I don't giggle.Throughout the movie the Gettysburg Address kept developing. A phrasehere, a paragraph there, all naturally flowing from the action in themovie. I have never enjoyed an Asylum script this much.Yes the acting was stiff. A lot of the scenes were clumsily blocked anddirected. The Civil War battle scenes were pretty good. Almostcertainly stolen from somewhere else, or they just filmed at areenactors event. Too many people did dumb stuff. Low budget zombiefilm I get it.But I was completely taken by surprise by the ending. I really didn'tsee that one coming. Maybe I was just being a little slow. For what it is, this film was about as it could be, and much betterthan it deserved to be. Give it a chance.

Bill Oberst Jr. was a great Abe

The movie is most definitely low budget, the actors are not known andthe zombies sometimes looked like dolls waiting to have their headschopped off.The Asylum is known to make money from making low budget movies. Thisis done tying the name of their movie to look a little like the mainbox office movie. They haven't made a loss from any movie yet. Themovie being pouched here is Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. WellAsylum released theirs, Abraham Lincoln vs zombies. The plot features Abe, during the civil war, as the confederates werelosing the war, they noticed that some walking dead flesh eatingcreatures is plaguing the land. Abe jumps to the rescue of the UnitedStates. He is seen slashing away, as he leads a group of soldiers andthey went after every zombie in existence. The writers tied the movie around what lead to the popular Abe speech. So for that I give them credit. The man who played Abe did so well, ifI may add and made Abe look like a bad ass. Hey, it even portrayed Abeas one who had a little fling with some prostitute way back when.Well Abe vs the zombies, lacks in reason and the good guys were allwritten down, a little too much to make Abe look good; come see Abejumping to the rescue like superman on heat. But it also showed Abe as being selfish, hey I will kill you if I don'thave feelings for you and you are infested by zombie blood. But I have to say the movie lacks so much and it was obvious it wasrushed to meet up with the timeline, as I have seen some Asylum movies, but this had too much talk.Well not much of a good watch.

I liked it.

This was one of the first recommendations I got from the Cinema Snobwebsite based on his review of the film and his interview with BillOberst Jr. I wasn't expecting much since its an asylum film, but Ihonestly enjoyed it. I found myself drawn to some of the charactersbeing portrayed and Bill Oberst did an excellent job as Abraham Lincolnand its a completely serviceable zombie film. Of course it has its problems. The CGI effects are incredibly cheaplooking (duh, its The Asylum, get over it) and the plot is fairlysimplistic. Its basically a standard zombie film which includeshistorical figures. If you can overlook that, then you should be ableto enjoy the film without much difficulty.

Kind of funny movie! Should be in comedy Genre

Prologue: Story line and Actors were nice. but the concept was not.Like sometime you will feel that children are playing Zombie game inyard. Truth: When they coming inside the one order to open the main gate allzombies are standing outside like skeleton. When they fire on ZOMBIElike a cartoon hold the gun for 2-3 second then give chance to zombieto attack. Sometime i wonder what are they waiting for why they don'tshoot. And when the rifle is out of ammo they just leave it with zombiethey don't try to hit it on it. Music: Coming to sound fx and music. SFX was good but sound is like oldCharlie Chaplin movie one track music in all movie is repeated againand again. Simply like a newbie edit home video with a singlesoundtrack. The scene concept sight was wonderfulI have watched and i like zombie movies but this one was awful. Sorryto say.

Pretty bad but you can do with worse

If you are familiar with The Asylum, you will know that a vast majorityof the time that what you are about to watch isn't going to be a goodmovie. The good news is though that Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies is farfrom their worst movie and not bad enough to be down there as one ofthem. Bill Oberst's performance is good, the photography, sets andcostumes help to make Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies one of thebetter-looking(even professional) Asylum movies and the ending doesevoke some chills. The bad news is that while there are worse from TheAsylum, Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies is a long way from a good movie. The music is very repetitive, most of the time quite one-note, and theCGI, beards and make-up are incredibly artificial-looking, at no pointdid I properly feel I was there in the moment. The dialogue is stilted, and while somewhat entertaining in their cheesiness at first thebutchering of literary and historical quotes got tiresome andembarrassing at the end of the day. The story is paced turgidly, thereis no atmosphere from a suspense or authentic historical point of view, and there is little interesting or entertaining if you exclude the lackof quality with the beards and for the zombies(who weren't scary oramusing at all). The characters are not ones to be emotionally investedin, and you learn little if anything about them. It was nice to see thehistorical figures but at the same time they seemed thrown in and therefor no reason other than the movie to screw around with the history.Apart from Oberst, the acting is all over the map, an uneasy mix ofunbearable blandness and over-compensating. In conclusion, pretty badbut there are worse from The Asylum and also worse movies in general.3/10 Bethany Cox
