A cop thriller with undoubted charisma...

Newman, after "Hud," continued his career with films that clearlysignified the evolution of the anti-hero into a man who activelyopposed the wrongs he saw around him… This opposition was to beeffectively personified by Steve McQueen… His early films that included"Hell Is for Heroes," "The Great Escape," "Love With the ProperStranger," and "Baby the Rain Must Fall," all roles which, togetherwith his addiction to motorcycle racing, led to McQueen'spersonification as anti-hero… This reached its peak in "Bullitt," the film which finally confirmedboth McQueen's image and his claim to stardom… McQueen is assigned to guard Johnny Ross (Pat Renella). When Ross isgunned down in his dingy hotel room hideout, Walter Chalmers (RobertVaughn), the ambitious assistant DA who hopes to expose the syndicate, threatens to ruin Bullitt's career if Ross dies… But Bullitt issuspicious and, when Ross does in fact die, he suppresses the newswhile he investigates… McQueen's ability to convey Bullitt's contempt for Chalmers' threats –and his knowledge that even though he might lose his job, he wouldnever lose his integrity – confirmed his image…Bullitt was Hud, Seventies style; he knows the world is full of crapbut he is pretty sure that it is possible to keep out of most of it…The film is distinguished by a splendid car chase through the streetsof San Francisco, with Detective Bullitt in a Mustang, chasing thebaddies in their sedan... which takes one's mind off the tedious plot…

A classic old thriller

This review is from: Bullitt (DVD) This is considered a classic thriller. I watched this movie when I was a kid and I loved it. Watching it again some 30 years later, I found it very slow and the car chase is just a minor plus in this movie. I watched all this movie simply because it is a classic however the story including the sound effects and picture of the DVD are simply very basic and not worth spending the money. Rent it first, and see if it is worth buying.

The rugged anti hero detective is back and so is the ULTRA cool cinema car chase

BULLIT was ahead of it's time in the tale of a police detective who goesafter a corupt politician only to have the unstereotypical ending where hegets away...or does he??? The films trademark is the car chase in SANFRANCISCO that reached speeds of 150 mph. (in which STEVE MCQUEEN did somedriving adding to the realism)In the film, FRANK BULLIT is the rugged, nononsense hero who is a bear to live with yet in the end is an ok guy.McQueenplays his role like something out a LOUIS LAMOUR western, which actuallyaddsto the flavor. This film set the stage for films like DIRTY HARRY and MCQand CODE OF SILENCE and later THE FRENCH CONNECTION. The car chase isrankedalong side the FRENCH CONNECTION and TO LIVE AND DIE IN LA as one of thebest on film. The character development is not bad and the scenery of the bay in SANFRANCISCO is phenomenal as a backdrop. ROBERT VAUGHN gives an excellentperformance as the villain in a role which shattered the MAN FROM UNCLEstereotype. He plays the role with a smug ruthlessness which was ahead ofit's time, an arrogant "nothing can touch me, "pride commeth before thefall"establishment jerk. Robert Vaughn gives the film credibility as theantagonist where had PAUL LIN been in the role it wouldn't. Highlyrecommended period film.

An Exceptional Docu-Drama, Period Piece, and Detective Story

Peter Yates's "Bullitt" captures the vibes of the late 60's San Franciscofrom a unique perspective: a realistic cop story filmed in a documentarystyle that takes its time developing every subplot and character."Bullitt"is not for the younger crowd who need a thrill-a-second, but itsdeliberatepace pays off with a great cast, romantic and professional conflict, andoneheckuva car chase. McQueen's Lt. Frank Bullitt is the ultimate in cool, andhe says it all when he advises a helpful doctor (Georg Stanford Brown) to"take it slow."I've seen this flick over 10-15 times since it came out, and it neverdisappoints. You go, Steve!

It's about as exiting as watching Mr. Rogers.

Steve McQueen in my opinion has made lotsa dull films (not The Great Escape and The Magnificent Seven.) Most of the film he looks at dead people at the morgue, and little else. He barely pays attention to his case. This movie is too [...] detailed. I remember them showing him in the grossery store 16 times. The film slowly got tiresomely slow. I was squirming in my seat 37 minutes before the car chase. When it came, all I heard was roaring motors. It was so damn pointless that after the car chase I decided to fast foward to the airport shootout. Big mistake! It was just as slow-paced as the car chase, only worse. The film is just too terrible for me to talk of anymore. I recommend it to [...] fans of dated films. Peace out!

the greatest famous chase

wow what a chase scene the schreeches the jumps the skids this movie has it all with the chase scene. Even if you don't like the rest of the film the chase scene is enough to buy this dvd. All i ever do is jump right to the chase scene anyways. For those hardcore car lovers and liked gone in sixty seconds the original should take this dvd quickly.

Not just for "the guys"!

There are plenty of women out there, like myself, who have always appreciated a "fine machine" whether it comes in the form of Steve McQueen or the Mustang Fastback GT! Steve had a lot to do with the directing in this movie as well as doing most of the chase scenes himself. It's a true American classic!

A good movie but poor video quality

This is a good movie for its age, but the video quality of the DVD is not that great. If Bonnie and Clyde can be done so well, it is around the same age, why can't they get this one right.

McQueen's greatest film

This movie is a great example of how style can prevail over substance in afilm. The story is straight-forward enough, but nothing outstanding - Det.Bullitt is assigned to protect a witness who will testify against the mob. He must protect him for about 40 hours, but somehow, hitmen discover thelocation of the witness and gun him down before he can testify. ThenBullitt must find the hitmen, as well as deal with an identity twistconcerning the witness. However, the music score, tight direction, the car chase, McQueen'sperformance, and especially Robert Vaughn's performance as a ruthlesspolitician make "Bullitt" worth watching. In fact the performances areexcellent all the way through the cast (with the exception of JacquelineBisset, who's there only for eye candy and brings nothing special to herrole).Of course, the car chase is the most famous aspect of the film. Simply put,it's the best car chase ever filmed, bar none. It's been copied, and withtoday's technology, should have been exceeded. Yet it still stands alone. Why? First, the presence of Steve McQueen - who else could bring it off as wellas he did? Second, the era it came from, the late 60's. Films in thosedays didn't have chases, so it set the standard. There's no camera tricksor special effects to screw it up, what you see is what you get. It's justwouldn't be the same if one of today's big stars got in his BMW to chaseanother guy in a Porsche, complete with special effects, the obligatoryexplosions and slow-motion techniques. If you've never seen it, watch it. If you have seen it, it still holds upafter repeated viewings. 9 out of 10.

The Best Car Chase I Ever Seen!

Bullit (1968) is an icon in crime & action movies, with the unforgettable car chase! The story is about Detective Bullit who is charged by politician Walter Chalmers to take into custody and protect 48 hours a key witness against the Mafia.Even if Bullit take all precautions Mob's hit men succeed in wounding the witness and his guard. Chalmers menaces to blame Police Department and Bullit personally for the failure. The witness dies at hospital and Bullit, with the help of a physician, smuggles the corpse and hide it in the Morgue as a Joe Doe. Then he leads his team in desperate search of the mobsters. What follows is the chronicle of the search against all odds and pressures. Steve McQueen as Lt. Bullit gives one of his best characterizations, this is not little thing, considering his previous performances in "The Magnificent Seven" (1960), "The Great Escape" (1963) and the remarkable "The Thomas Crown Affair" (1968); the future ones in "The Towering Inferno" (1974) and "Tom Horn" (1980).A very young and stylish Jacqueline Bisset fleshes Cathy, Bullit's fiancée; prolific Robert Vaughn gives Chalmers a poignant interpretation; Robert Duvall, more noted after his appearance in "The Godfather" (1972), acts as a taxi driver. All the cast performs over standard.Director Peter Yates is at his best, only surpassed, IMHO by his film "The Dresser" (1983). Special mention must be done for Frank Keller editing awarded with an Oscar, William Fraker's cinematography and Argentinean Lalo Schifrin's musical score. It is an extraordinary movie for all those interested in crime films and movie fans of every genre. Do not miss it! Reviewed by Max Yofre.

British chic with a dose of detached 60's cool...

Steve McQueen knew something that the rest of his contemporariesdidn't. That the world he lived in was changing. Changing in dramaticways that frightened and confused people without the sophistication orforesight to understand them. Frank Bullitt is a by-product of thissocietal upheaval, and deals with it by removing himself from anyemotional attachment to it. Frank Bullitt is a pragmatist in a world ofwide-eyed daydreamers. He does his job, and does it well. He makes noapologies and seems all too aware that despite his integrity anddedication to the "job", at the end of the day he's still just punchinga clock. Highly recommended.

The Car Chase

This movie was made back in the days when cars had muscle! There are no special effects in this movie. Everything was filmed on location with real equipment, cars and buildings. There is lots of old office equipment that was considered high tech at the time but now is obsolete. The car chase that is the central part of the movie is done with real cars. They beefed up the suspension systems on the cars so they could handle the San Francisco hills without damaging the cars. In most movies with car chases they use many duplicate cars and you can see them being irreparably damaged in one scene and in perfect condition the next. The chase between a Dodge Charger and a Ford Fastback Mustang is a classic chase. They used a real hospital and doctors and nurses for the hospital scenes. it's hard to believe that in 1968 San Francisco hospitals were so cramped and claustrophobic. If you've ever been in a modern hospital you can see the great advances in medical technology when you watch this movie. it's a movie with few words. It was like a Jack Webb Dragnet story with better acting. For the next 10 years after this movie Cop movies and TV shows tried to be accurate and realistic. The story has a cynical few of politics and politicians. The bad guys included not just the mob hit men but a corrupt politician played by the Man from UNCLE.

Nostalgic favorite

I saw this movie Christmas Day 1969. At the time I lived in San Mateo and worked in San Francisco. Knowledge of the area helped me to appreciate the setting and being a McQueen fan also helped.I have seen this movie many times since that day, (up to the present), and am happy to say that all of the pieces finally fit for me. It took a couple of viewings to get the plot straight and many more to get details not readily apparent. I won't say much more except that at the time this film was made, the car chase blew everybody away and set the stage for subsequent and too often overblown copycat chases. The car chase was not the movie however, the story line with very human characters is what I liked most about this film. An example of this would be the Bullitt character being awakened by his detective partner who helps himself to orange juice which Bullitt mistakenly thinks is for him. The cabby, played by Robert Duvall, has a dog doll in the back window and doesn't make a pest of himself by chatting up his fare. Even the assassins are human in that they aren't supermen and make mistakes that they get frustrated trying to rectify. All in all, my favorite detective yarn. Extraordinary people made to look ordinary.

a masterpiece of authenticity

this movie is great because of the realism applied topolice, hospital, and morgue procedures, not theatrical thatswhat makes it good, not to mention the awesome chase scene one of the first of its of kind, and one that all scenes are measured against, not a whole lot of action, not much violence, nudity, or profanity makes this a great movie for younger audiences, the plot is great, and mcqueen is awesome. this is amust for any steve mcqueen fan or anyone that appreciates a realistic approach to movie making and anyone who can appreciate a awesome chase scene with two of the best muscle cars around

Apart from the classic chase scene, there many other pleasures to be had in this stylish policier, one that changed considerably the entire vocabulary of Hollywood's action-thrillers.

Car chase scene

I still think this contains the best car chase scene ever filmed. Put together a Shelby Mustang and a hemi powered Dodge Charger and the hills of San Francisco and you have all the ingredients.

It's the late 60's, and

Men are men of few words, keep their feeling to themselves and drive really great cars. I appreciated the pretty realistic depiction of medical treatment. We may not do it this way anymore, but it is impressive that they looked at how it was actually done. The car chase? In blu-ray on a decent sound system, I felt my stomach lurch with every hill and the sounds......It's rare I would say this, but I actually enjoyed it more in my living room than I did whe I first saw it( at a drive-in, with the standard issue speaker hanging on the windows of my mom's '67 Grand Prix.)
