Best comedy ever

This is of course my personal opinion, but i do consider Community tobe the best comedy ever made. The writing is genius, the references aremind blowing and ,maybe excluding Yvette Nicole Brown mostly because ofher boring character, all the actors are superb . And while season 1 isdefinitely funnier and maybe more suitable for a wider audience, seasons 2 and 3 are incredible and many times reach an artistic levelof filming that you would encounter only in high budget movies. Thereason for this is obvious, season 1 has a lot of clichés, or "easyhumor" as i like to call it, probably to attract many viewers. Then DanHarmon decided to let his creativity flow and managed to give us 2seasons of exceptional quality. Really streets ahead! Saying all that,i understand why a lot of people can't connect with the humor or thereference jokes of the show. But for those of us that like to walk inthe same path as Dan Harmon does with his humor, this show is awonderful treat. Community will probably get canceled this year, butfor me it has already reached the maximum level of quality for asitcom. Nothing can ever top it.

Hilarious. Dan Harmon a genius.

I saw bits of the pilot and at first didn't see anything that I liked. However, picked up the series in the middle and started getting moreinterested in it. Before I knew it, I watched 22 episodes in 3 days. This is probably my favorite comedy on TV at the moment. The Office hastaken a backseat to my new favorite "Community." One thing that I'venoticed is that this show is heavy on references. However, this doesn'tseem too forced. There is actually a character that makes references tomovies and TV in order to relate to people. However, this is not asannoying as it sounds as they have created him into the most funny andlovable persona I've seen on TV. The whole cast is actually great andyou can tell that there is a good chemistry amongst the actors. The whole thing takes place in a community college that is under theinfluence of a dean with issues on political correctness and status. They bring the insecurities of the school into play a lot by havinglots of school events like Green week, STD fair, Merry Happy week, etc.It becomes an atmosphere of hilarity as the group of misfits plow theirway through this school of abnormalities and oddness. There is not one actor on set that I hate or think is doing a bad job.So far there has only been one season so we shall see how long thislasts before they potentially ruin some characters. However, I amoptimistic about the future of this series and really think this showwill catch on in a big way. This is how comedy should be done. I can'tget over how many times I have laughed watching this show. Usually Idon't laugh that much while watching TV.

Something new that hasn't been seen for a while . . .

I started watching this show late in the season, and accidentally cameacross it by accident on Hulu (I meant to click on something else). Iam glad I did. What I like about this show in particular is that it is primarilyconcerned with the platonic dynamic among the members of a mish-mashedgroup. For me, that is really refreshing. I have never been a real fanof major network sitcoms because of what I perceive as a complete lackof ingenuity and a revolution around unoriginal themes (I actuallystarted tuning into the Disney show, Suite Life of Zach and Cody forthe reasons stated herein). There have been a few good ones here andthere, but most friendship-oriented sitcoms geared towards adultsseemed to develop the over-used story of a group of friends sittingaround crabbing about their love lives and how to fix them, i.e.Friends, Will and Grace, O.C. (not exactly a sitcom), Sex and the City, even 30 Rock to a certain degree. I realize the bulk of those shows arefrom a few years back, but it was those sorts of shows (not to mentionthe devil-conceived reality shows) that really turned me off from majornetwork programming. I enjoyed them at the time, but they all seemed tograce the same themes: we're such close friends and we're going to helpeach other find boyfriends. Puke! I got so sick of seeing friendshipsrevolving around getting someone laid. Then I came upon Community. I've watched every episode thus far in thefirst season and I really appreciate its commitment to focusing on thecore relationships among the friends. Of course they delve into thesexual tensions that naturally exist, but it always remains focused onthe friendships, and through funny means. I think this kind of theme isso necessary in today's programming. It's OK to "just be friends" withsomeone. It's OK to be yourself, to be dorky, funny, fussy, uptight, bitchy, whatev. There are still people out there that can care aboutyou. It doesn't have to be about finding love or sex, being sexy, orbeing desired by the gender from which you seek attention. That is whatI like about Community, it just shows friends being friends withoutpretense. As far as the show goes substantively, I think it is quite funny. Itsometimes misses the mark, but I think those moments are rare. Someepisodes are funnier than others, some characters are funnier thanothers, but everyone has their moment. I love Joel McHale, I think he'sa riot, and Chevy Chase is really great. Someone else mentioned howthey were glad he wasn't over-taking the show's humor elements and Ialso appreciate that. His humor is well- spaced throughout the show. The guy who plays the dean is a riot as well. I love his scenes.I also really enjoy the community college setting. It's a veryappropriate setting for a show about a diverse group of friends thateach have their own special and interesting reasons for being there. Iknow some people dislike the overt, "politically correct"representation in the group. There are some stereotypes, theculturally- insensitive older person, the fabulous African-Americanwoman, the WASP-y, pretentious brat, the hipster, the cool guy, thenerd, etc. It can get a tad clichéd, but I think it works specificallybecause the community college setting is a place where you might findthat mixture of people. It appeals to people from all walks of life:younger, college-aged students, people who have time on their hands andwant more education, people trying to make a new start in life, etc. Ithink it's a great and interesting setting to use in a show about aunconventional group of friends. I really think the creators planned itout well. So yes, if you are like me and enjoy seeing shows about friends beingjust friends, and developing those platonic relationships, itsdefinitely worth the try. I certainly plan on continuing.

Thursday night, meet your next promising comedy!

Jeff Wheeler(Joel McHale, heretofore previously known as the latest in along line of wiseacres who host/hosted E!'s "The Soup")has beendemoted--via a plot contrivance that's as improbable as it isinspired--from accomplished lawyer to freshman at a local communitycollege. Forced to suck it up,Jeff goes to this Juco and discovers thathe may,in fact, have a bonding with a group of students in his Spanishcourse(!). Among them:a skeptical hot girl(Gillian Jacobs),a cinemaauteur wannabe(Danny Pudi),a highly-opinionated black lady(YvetteNicole Brown),the seemingly virginal fuddy-dud(Alison Edie),the "Maybehe's gay/maybe not" star athlete(Donald Glover)and a one-timesuccessful entrepreneur with a seemingly endless amount of darkcharacter flaws(Chevy Chase,as inspired a comeback as ever!). Ridingherd over these less-than-inspired selfish individuals are SenorChang(Ken Leung, capitalizing on his ability to slip into psychoticcomedic characters wherever he can find them),the Spanish teacher witha bit of a Napoleon complex and Dean Pelton(Jim Rash),a blissfullyoblivious and callous department head.A dark comedy, full of a veritable stream of Anti-PSA type messages andcampus stereotypes of various amounts of unlikability, this show joinsthe seemingly long and gilded pantheon of acclaimed AND well-receivedcomedies on NBC's Thursday nights. I have no real fix on how well thisshow is doing,ratings-wise,but I suspect that enough good word of mouthwill keep this one running for AT LEAST another season. Well,I can hopeanyway. A fun(if perhaps in need of polish) show that augments an already verywatchable evening of shows!

Outstanding!

Community joined the NBC Thursday night lineup back in 2009 as the showwith Chevy Chase, the guy from the soup and the Asian guy from TheHangover. It was a huge underdog from the start (and still is) with badratings and not a big fan-base. But when the first Halloween episoderolled along something changed.....it became GREAT and the cast reallyfound their chemistry. While most people tuned in for Chevy Chase, KenJeong and Joel Mchale originally, it was the others (Glover, Pudi,Brie, Brown and Jacobs) that made this cast the best on TV. Then withthe "Chicken Fingers" episode and "Modern Warfare" It showed Americawhat it's like to take your classic sitcom and smash it into millionsof pieces. It became the anti-sitcom, if you will. Community is themost creative and genius shows ever to grace television.

Nice show but bad spoken Arabic

In few words, it is nice show. The only horrible thing is Abed and hisFather, both are talking in really bad Arabic ( because the actors areactually of Indian and Pakistani origin rather than Palestinian). It isbetter if none of them talk in Arabic at all to avoid that. The otherthing is that the father English accent is no way to be spoken by anArabic. The Arabic accent of English is totally different. It is better to have Arabic actors to represent Arabic character. Ifnon Arabic used an Arabic character, it is better not to speak inArabic at all.Despite all of that the Show is really nice and entertaining.

Just great :)

I really enjoyed watching this show!!! It is plain awesome in lack of abetter word :) First, the movie and TV shows references, which arealways hilarious and well written! Second, (starting to sound like Jeffa little :) ) the cast and the writing are just phenomenal and u cansee that they are all just having so much fun on and off camera ! :)And third, the first show after BBT i can really really call the bestcomedy on the air... Just hope NBC does a good job keeping it on theair :)) Hang in there u guys, u r truly the best !!!! Greeting fromSerbiap.s. My only remark was the stereotype u made about the Balkans andSerbian rum, although i do think we kinda deserve it as all the otherracial and country stereotypes u so well put in the show an a comic andintelligent way ! Keep up the good work !

Witty and Great!

The fall of 2009 was a great year for comedies. Two reached out to mewith both having Blast from the Past actors (Chevy Chase and Ed O'Neil)which are Community and Modern Family. Viewers have found two new showsto laugh at once again with fresh new witty humor and great acting.Community has hilarious ideas with having a Asian Spanish Teacher whichis well played by Ken Jeong. Abed the movie loving/quoting difficultsocial skills middle eastern and finally one of the moments I have beenwaiting for of Donald Glover (or anyone from DerrickComedy) finallyhaving a spot on TV. This show is great and have not seen onedisappointing episode. The extra clips in the end are great way to endeach episode to.

What's the reason for Season 2 to be so much inferior to Season 1

Answering my own question on the subject... i just don't know.Besides the obvious reason, that possibly the creativity didn't lastlong, i can't find any other reason.I believe that Season 1 is one of the most well written things thati've seen, and it's so comic that i placed the "El Tigre Chino" on the1st place of the podium for comedy characters OF ALL TIMES (i'm stilllooking for posters of the character to place in a wall at my place).Unfortonately, even Ken Jeong character looses its magic in season 2(but still, the most funny character for me in 2nd season).I just couldn't watch more that 4 episodes...What a disappointment season 2 is... but a 10 out of 10 for season 1.

Why so many terrible ratings

I watch Community and it's funny most of the time. Some episodes arenot so good but overall I think it's a good sitcom so why does thisshow have such bad ratings on NBC? I don't understand how a show canhave so many fans but yet not be as popular as "2 Broke Girls" or "HowI met Your Mother". Community has been on NBC for years now and itstill can't get really good ratings. How did this happen and can thischange? The Nielsen ratings for Community is at best average for NC andwhen compared to ABC & CBS & FOX then the ratings are really not goodso how can NBC turn this around? It seems to me that smart sitcoms donot make NBC any money which is really sad. If NBC puts it back onThursday night and if "Community" continues to get medium ratings doyou think that NBC will keep it around long enough for syndication ordo you think that NBC will continue to see the writing on the wall andtry to be more like ABC & CBS?

The Best Comedy On Television

This show is vastly underrated. It gets overlooked next to populartitles like The Office and 30 Rock. Not that these shows aren't great,I love them, but Community is far superior. Not only is it hilarious,it's incredibly creative and unique. You never know what to expect. Inone episode, the plot will simply be that the main character, JeffWinger, gets back in touch with his old lawyers buddies. A few episodeslater, contaminated meat turns everyone at a party into mindlesszombies with an appetite for flesh. And then skip a few more episodesand you get a story told entirely in claymation! Joel McHale is the perfect lead for this show. He's cool, calm and agreat leader for the study group. But the whole ensemble is whereCommunity's strengths lie. Chevy Chase is great, as always, as thestrange and hilarious Piers Hawthorne. Gillian Jacobs, as Britta, isfantastic as Jeff's on-again, off-again love interest. With thisrelationship, the show does an amazing job of spoofing classic sitcom"Sam and Diane" relationships. Danny Pudi, as the movie and TV fanaticAbed, is perhaps my favorite character. His character seems self-aware,and he frequently makes references to their lives being similar to asitcom. Donald Glover and Yvette Nicole Brown also star as thedumb-jock with a heart of gold Troy and religious divorced mom Shirley.Rounding up the stellar ensemble is Allison Brie. Playing the innocentand simple character of Annie, she could easily be overlooked. But ofcourse she fits the part perfectly and steals the show in many episodeswith her emotional outbursts. All in all, Community is a great show that is worth checking out. Andif you want an episode to start with, the action-movie spoof "ModernWarfare" may be the best thing I have ever seen on television.

Sorry...Not me, the show

I attempted to watch the first two episodes of this unfunny mishmash ofa sitcom, but was compelled to quickly find my "clicker" lest what'sleft of my 'baby boomer' brain disintegrate. My mother taught me to tryand find the good in everything. Okay. Gillian Jacobs is easy on theeyes. That said, the rest of the show is just plain stupid. Set on acommunity college run by a cartoon-like dean, there is a politicallycorrect group of losers comprising a Spanish study group formed by afilm-flam disbarred lawyer whose sole goal in life is to score with thelovely albeit icy Ms. Jacobs. Chevy Chase, whom I haven't yet forgivenfor 1997's "Vegas Vacation", plays a moronic, clueless-faced, seniorcitizen turned student. It only gets worse, as Joel McHale's charactergives new meaning to 'sleeze' and has the warmth of a frozenrattlesnake. It's not that I don't like off-the-wall comedies, as"Scrubs", "Arrested Development" and "The Office" are among my all-timefavorites. It's just that I do not find stupidity very funny. I mustconfess to a triple digit IQ, so "Community" will in all likelihood bea smash hit. I mean if "Parks and Recreation" can make it to a secondseason while "Arrested Development" gets canceled, anything is possibletoday's idiocracy.

One of the best series, not just now but ever!

This TV-series blew my mind when I first started watching it, and thatwas not the only time. Again and again this show has surprised andblown my mind. It is a perfect mix of comedy (various types of comedyranging from hilarious to space to "whaaaat! This is awesome", actionand even a deeper , sad story. Honestly, the actors are top-notch and Chevy Chase again proves he is aking of comedy. The rest of the actors are to me "new", and have notstarred in anything famous as far as I know (except for Alison Brie),but that does not mean they can't act. Among these, the one that reallyimpresses me is Jim Rash aka Dean Pelton. There is no way you can notlove this guy and the character he plays. Also, if you decide to watch this show, do not just watch the firstepisode! You have to see at least two, preferably three and by thenyou're hooked. I've promoted this show to 4 friends of mine, and eachtime we've sat down and watched the first three episodes in a row andafter the third one (or 1 time the second one), they'll be begging formore. You're addicted by then, and the only cure is more Greendale. Last argument. The show gets better the more times you watch it. I'veseen it three times now, and each time you notice something new, something subtle, but still pretty funny. I'm not going to go intodetail due to spoilers, but the humour is on several levels and eachcharacter is funny on their level of humour. For example Troy is one ofthe persons you want to study because he is subtly funny as well. Well, what are you waiting for? Go watch it now!

I wish I knew them!

What an excellent show! It is witty, funny and keeps you wanting more.I love the cast of this show, everyone fits their characters well. Ifeel like the study group that was formed offers a bit of crazy in allkinds of forms. I like how we meet the characters from the beginningand get to be a part of their lives as the show develops. I foundseason 2 to be even better than season 1. I have a few favouriteepisodes but overall I can watch any episodes more than once. There arefew shows I would re-watch and this has been added to my list. I feellike the humour in this show is very creative, as the situations arenot the typical comical situations that you would expect. Everyone inthis show contributes to the comedy, from the Dean to the lunch lady, again a great cast! I can't wait for season 3!!!!

Cheerful with none of the Cheese

Considering our day and age, it isn't surprising that most decentcomedy on TV these days is dark, ironic, and satirical. Shows likeWeeds, Californication, Shameless etc. are definitely not for the fainthearted despite their brilliance. But I'm pleased to announce that Community manages to avoid a jadedworldview and succeeds at being genuinely funny. The dialogue is sharpand quick, the acting is top-notch, and everything is very colorful. The humor has wonderful range from childlike physical comedy tolightning fast witticism. You definitely get the feeling that everyoneinvolved with this project is having a great time.Other modern comedies that have attempted to be this cheerful havenever quite been able to hit the spot between too much sugary sweetness(Glee) and a crippling emotional weight (Scrubs). Yet Communityachieves a perfect balancing act of presenting unique characters whodevelop in believable ways, without killing the mood with teary scenesor a rampant lack of realism. Even at its most serious (which is rare)you can always expect a great pick-me-up joke just seconds away andthis is extremely refreshing.I highly recommend this show to everyone. Its a fantastic comedy thatwill not let you stop smiling!

Love this show.

Being the jaded, middle aged lump that i am, very little makes megiggly these days, except Community. It never fails to divert myattention, make me laugh and put me in a far better mood than before iwatched it.In all honesty i only gave it a chance originally due to theinvolvement of Chevy Chase and Joel McHale, i've always been a big fanof Chevy's films and i first saw Joel on The Soup, which is shownpretty regularly on the E channel here in the UK.The show is a well kept little secret here in Blighty, people keepsaying, "hey, have you seen that show with the people in the college?",people seem to stumble across it. It shows on Viva, which is part ofMTV Europe, frankly this show needs to be front and centre Channel 4,Friday nights in the traditional Cheers, Frasier and Friends slot. This show gets an A+ in all its classes, writing, performances, direction. It nails its pop culture references, but never strays toofar towards parody, it has whip smart dialogue and hilarious visualgags. The central characters of the study group are immediatelylikable, yet sustained viewing reveals their depths and i think thisaccounts for the warmth the show exudes, from the characters and to itsaudience. In summary, this is GOOD TV, it needs to be seen by a much wideraudience here in the UK, Channel 4 i'm looking at you, season one andtwo are now on my DVD shelf, season three is just kicking off, don't bea dingbat, watch it, its impossible that it wont work its magic on you,as Pierce says "never stop Laerning !"

Good new show...hope it lasts

I was a little skeptical when I first watched Community because of allthe pro-mos that were done. It seemed like every commercial break had apro-mo saying how great this show is going to be...which usually turnsme off a program.I missed the first episode but caught the subsequent ones and they werefunny. Chevy Chase does a good job at not taking over as the lead inwhat is essentially an ensemble cast. McHale does a good job at being aguy that does not want to be involved in other peoples' lives, but endsup getting dragged in anyways. The Spanish rap that was done at the very end of episode 2 was justhilarious and the dance at the end last night was great. Silly butstill funny and entertaining.

A group of misfits try to survive community college together

"Community" is a show about an odd Spanish class study group. There'snot much Spanish or studying, it's just an excuse to bring the casttogether. Each character has his or her own issues and personalityquirks. Being set at a small-time community college allows for theunlikely mix of students, old and young, from all walks of life.Joel McHale (E!'s "The Soup") capably handles the lead, playing JeffWinger, a shrewd ex-lawyer thrown back in school after authoritiesfound out about his bogus law degree. Also in the group are Abed (Danny Pudi), an eccentric social outcast;Troy (Donald Glover), the star athlete and big man on campus at his oldhigh school, now trying to fit in in a new environment; Shirley (YvetteNicole Brown), a single mother continuing her education in adulthood;Annie (Alison Brie), a preppy high school dropout; and Britta (GillianJacobs), an outspoken feminist with some experience in the real world.Chevy Chase is part of the group as well, in a comeback role as Pierce,an older and slightly delusional business man. A pudgier and grayerChevy Chase than viewers might remember, but he's still a funny man.The Spanish teacher (Señor Chang) is played by familiar-face Ken Jeong(popular nowadays from his roles in films THE HANGOVER and various JuddApatow productions). I remember him in low-key roles on "The Office"and KNOCKED UP, but here he unleashes his wild side. Also thrown into the mix is the scrawny, bald-headed dean (Jim Rash),an overall inept administrator put in charge of the small-timeGreendale Community College. He comes up with strange ideas to betterthe college (like changing the team name to the Human Beings anddeveloping a racially neutral mascot that won't offend anyone) andenvies Jeff's popularity. The show is about the different characters and how they interact, aswell as the wacky goings-on at Greendale. The study group becomes likea little family for the misfits as they try to survive the farce thatis community college. It's about the characters bettering their livesand coming together to support one another, with hilarious twists andturns along the way.A big part of the show has been Jeff's attempts to win over Britta, thegirl he has a crush on. (In fact, the whole study group was originallya ruse in order for Jeff to get to know Britta.) It's not a romancelike Jim and Pam (from "The Office"), but Britta always gets Jeff to beless sleazy in order to impress her. Jeff is not a great human being, but in his attempts to get closer to Britta he becomes a better person. For a while, at least.Joel McHale shines in the role of the sarcastic and cocky manipulator, and the ensemble does a good job backing him up. (Chase holds his ownin a supporting role, Pudi is a fan favorite for his unusual behaviorand pop-culture references, and the others have their moments aseveryone shares screen time.)The show is also pretty funny. There are a few different styles ofcomedy at play, and the show is good for the occasional witty retort. While not side-splittingly funny, the jokes do come early and oftenwithin the half-hour airtime. Some are hits, some are misses, but thejokes keep coming. And with so many different characters to follow, things stay fresh."Community" is a good new comedy. I think it has a chance to stickaround. McHale and Chase provide minor star power and the show offersan interesting cast of characters who work well together. It's not my favorite, but the humor should appeal to a lot of people. It does have its moments. "Community" is as decent a sitcom as anynowadays. Not one of the elite, but it's pretty good. Check it out foryourself.

thoughts of the characters and opinion

I believe myself to be bit of a film enthusiast but community is a likea drug to me, I am addicted to watching it. Every night i watch about 4episodes even if i am very tired, thats how good it is..... It hasreplaced movies for me (temporarily). Abed and pierce i feel both bringunique deliveries to the programme that help it to be both comical andinteresting. The other characters each have there fair share ofentertainment that is enjoyable for all to watch, no vulgarity, nocussing, very minor drug use and very minor sex implications. Itherefore think It is an Excellent programme and highly recommended it.10/10. Q. I have just finished watching all of Season 3 and waswondering how many more seasons there are going to be? at the end ofseason 3 it said #sixseasonsandamovie but i wanted to know if that wasgenuine?

Probably the best TV show made in the past decade

This show captured me from the first episode i saw. I intentionallywatched it because it had Chevy Chase, and I've always been a big fanof him. But the show was so well written and so self aware that ibecame taken with it instantly. I say self aware because the show knowsit is a sitcom, it doesn't try to blow romance and drama all over yourface like some sitcoms out there (cough...Friends...cough). Albeit,Community does have its cliché moments, but at the same time it knowsthey are cliché and makes fun of them. It is quite simply the bestwritten and most under rated and snubbed show on TV. Heres to sixseasons and a movie.
