Every plus sized diva's must have

I adore this show. It took Lifetime to produce something so funny and different. Happy to see a plus sized woman finally being portrayed as smart, sexy and funny. Its nice to see Jane evolve as a character, I can't wait to see what happens next season

I can't believe it's such a great show!

The premise is that a brainless, model, Deb, accidentally dies, presses a button and is accidentally sent back to earth. Unfortunately, she's sent back in the body of an overweight lawyer, Jane, who was a good person (I know a lawyer that was a good person). The main actress, Brooke Elliott does a great job playing a woman who still sees herself as a model living in a world that perceives her as overweight lawyer; seeing her character evolve from a self indulgent model into someone building a conscious is entertaining. She is forced into ethical dilemmas weekly that are funny, sad, or sometimes touching. There are also plenty of "big name" special guest stars playing some really funny characters. Truthfully, with the plot I'm surprised this isn't just another fluff show but it isn't. This show leaves you feeling good about the world, hopeful; I don't know how but it does. I guess I should add that the first couple of shows aren't as good as the later shows but they lay the ground work, so you should watch them knowing that the show turns into something special quickly.

Garbage

Fox has put on some really bad shows on the air, so it passing on apilot should tell you something. That's what happened to this piece oftrash. In fairness, the problem with this show is probably theexcruciating level of annoyance I feel for the lead character/actress.I'm not a violent person but something about this woman makes me wantto punch her in the throat. I don't know what it is but I really don'tlike this woman. I don't know if it's how she delivers her lines orperhaps she's just one of those chubbos who think they're hot. I can'texactly put my finger on it. Some people like to watch fat, annoyingwomen. If you're one, then you'll probably like this show.

Not your average TV show

OK, you KNOW if Margaret Cho is involved, there will be some decentwriting. As much as I like the show, Cho's is my favorite character. She fires up any scene she's in. Wait, no Fred is my favoritecharacter. And Grayson. And Jane! Everybody's interesting, seriously, and the acting is really right on. The premise is Freaky Friday meetsLA Law, but add in a guardian angel, smart chicks, models, and freshstory lines.. and hey, you've got my attention. Drop Dead Diva isunpredictable, but with the likable hooks surrounding romance, achieving partner, and beauty. You can stream it on Netflix, which isslightly addictive. So beware.

Grabs you from the beginning

If this pilot episode were a book it would be a page turner! Now I have to catch up and watch all of season one and two. Can't wait to begin watching the rest!I hope there will be a season three to come.

Surprisingly Good

So many movies about fat girls fall flat (such as Phat Girlz) so when I first heard of this show and its premise, I was very skeptical at first. Even with a good premise, a show can fail very hard.Fortunately, this is NOT such a show. You get this gorgeous, 24 year old model who dies in a traffic accident, and a little mishap in Heaven (or beyond, or however you see it) along with a bit of stubbornness on Deb's part causes her to crash back to Earth - in a body entirely not her own. She is now stuck as 32-year old Jane, a woman who might not be gorgeous but is very smart. Some of that smartness rubs over onto Deb, who gains surprising insights with her new brain. Deb does the best she can in the body she is now stuck with, and of course, this leads to some funny and/or sad situations. What is especially bitter for Deb is that she works with Grayson, her finance. At least, her finance back when she was still known as 'Deb'. As Jane, she has to start all over, which is so hard because she longs to tell him the truth. There's a lot more to this show than just this, each episode also focuses on a legal case (or two) and Deb, with Jane's intellect and legal experience, must combine this with her own knowledge of things from her model days.Overall, this is a very good show - better than what I would have expected. For some, this will have a 'chick flick' feel to it. If you absolutely hate that kind of stuff, then you won't enjoy this, but rest assured, this show has enough serious and thought-provoking moments to make it a solid series.

You Go Diva!

This review is from: Drop Dead Diva: The Complete First Season (DVD) This has to be one of the most delightful series on television. While the commercial networks, (CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX and WB), seem content to program hours of reality garbage, this wonderful series is thought provoking, innovative, funny and done with unbridled panache and skill....something the clueless networks have seemingly forgotten how to do. Brooke Elliott is marvelous as Jane and the ensemble cast have the chemistry to play off one another, akin to a lovingly prepared gourmet meal that comes together to create a delicious and lasting impression. I am counting the days until Season Two becomes available. A wonderful and joyous series that makes you feel good!

LOVE IT!

This is one of those series that is sweet and funny, with a very talented cast. If that's your thing, then you'll enjoy drop dead diva. I'm not a person with a lot of leisure time to follow series. This is a series that I make a point to chase. The leading lady is an amazing actress with a beautiful voice. I watch it b/c I care about the characters, and would like to see what happens to them. Also, the stories in court range from smart to touching. I say give it a shot. Watch the first two episodes, and by then, you'll know whether you like it or not. If you don't, then you lost less than two hours, but if you do, then you'll be in for a treat! PS: New York Times wrote an article about the show last year for those interested.

Kind of fun but the WORST legal show

We watch this regularly and enjoy the actors. Given the fact that theshow purports to be set at a law firm, though, you'd think that theywould at least try to get SOMETHING about the law right. NOTHING inthis show even approaches legal reality. I'm willing to cut shows someslack, but honestly--every show includes something that would getseveral people disbarred and misstates several aspects of the law.Tonight: three strikes=three violent crimes, not check bouncing. Youcan't get medical records like that; and it's a federal crime to letyour boyfriend look at them, even if you get them. Defending a clientwho is on trial for robbing you? With all those producers, you'd thinkthey could at least think about someone -- a legal secretary?--whocould save them from some of the more outrageous errors. But they getsome judges right.

Love love LOVE Drop Dead Diva!!!

This review is from: Drop Dead Diva: The Complete First Season (DVD) This is by far the best show I have ever seen on TV. It is witty, funny and emotional! The cast of characters bring different flavors to the pot but it all blends together VERY well. Written, directed and acted exceptionally well. Hope to see more seasons of this show! :)

Love It!

I honestly love this show! and to be honest it isn't for everyone. But i love how it explores what a "Plus" Size, Curvacious, woman goes through on a near daily basis! We honestly are never aware of the prejudices we have towards the women and men of a "larger" size. I love how they explore this yet create a positive and meaningful experience. at times the main character annoys me but for the most part when she is truly inspirational those are the times i absolutely adore and love her! I love that she tries to be a good person and tries to do good. And I love that this is such a good role model for full figured women. Her clothes can be ugly sometimes but for the most part they are hip and modern and look good on her and make her figure look appealing. Just because you're a plus size person doesn't mean you have to wear a moo-moo or dress like an ugly elephant. I love it! Lane Bryant, DeltaBurk and Drop Dead Diva are a plus size fashionita's dream come true! lovely clothes lovely person. A Hilarious and smart comedy. truly a must see!

Shocked that I loved this new show....

I was not expecting to like this new show...I watched the first episode in Season one with a lot of skepticism. But by the end of the first show, I was hooked. The second episode completely brought me on board full time. I can't wait to see more. I think all ages of women would love this show. Watch it!

Keep watching and you'll be thankful! (with response to negative reviews and first impressions)

I think some of the critics - well, the more negative ones - aremissing the point. The first episode did not fully portray therespective virtues of each character, but what pilot does? This very quickly became my guilty pleasure show: it's relaxing, funny, endlessly entertaining and surprisingly witty. True, Deb and Jane atfirst seem like polar opposites and completely stereotyped, but, likewith all first impressions, they only scratch the surface. Just watchas the writing explores Deb's capacity for empathy, insight andcompassion, which is only unleashed when this new vessel forces her tostop judging herself based on her dress size, her ability to adhere tosome crazy fad diet and the number of free drinks she receives. Debbelieved her only redeeming qualities were superficial, and learned totreat the world as such. However, even without the supplement of Jane'salien intelligence, Jane's body allowed her to see beneath the surface;she learned to approach moral dilemmas with integrity and adapt underdifficult circumstances. It is true that the commercials for DDD made it seem to enforce themyopic idea that brains and beauty were mutually exclusive in women, that Jane only possessed 'inner-beauty', and that overweight women weresomehow a joke. This isn't actually what the show is about. REBUTTALS to these criticisms: FIRST, the show doesn't actually control commercials. In fact, they'reoften extremely misleading thanks to marketing, so people shouldn'tbase a program's ideology on that. SECOND, Jane's fixation on food isn't abnormal: it's nature. She looksto food for comfort AND satiety; but guess what? So does Deb and Stacy!A lot of people do, and usually women thanks to hormonal andneurotransmitter activity - food makes people feel better. I'm notoverweight and I have to slow down when I pass a chocolate shop. Andwe're allowed to laugh at ourselves a little for this. Of course, because Jane's body is used to eating a lot of sweets, she's going tocrave them more than those who aren't so dependent. A stressful,time-consuming and intellectually exhausting job will make you superhungry, and usually for the bad things (damn survival instinct!). Thismakes exercise more of a challenge, not to mention at her weight it ismore difficult. I don't think it's wrong to reveal these struggles;it's actually humanising. This isn't to say that Jane SHOULDN'T be pursuing a physically, nutritionally more healthy lifestyle - these are extremely important -but at least Jane, and Deb-Jane learned to accept herself as she is,and look beyond the pronounced focus on looks and external validationthat too many of us have. So many of us battle with our self-image. Wetry to keep healthy, but it's never good enough; therein lies theblurred line between multi-faceted health, and obsession andunattainable goals. Deb still wanted to lose weight, was absolutelyobsessed with her exterior, and although she ate healthfully, shedidn't eat enough. That isn't healthy, either, although not asdetrimental as being clinically overweight. We all have our issues.SECOND, Jane is gorgeous, before and after the Deb invasion. Deb wasgorgeous, but hadn't used her brain much or developed her personality.Old Jane was gorgeous, and Deb-Jane is gorgeous. So clearly smart andsexy can overlap! It is unfortunate that Deb-Jane, at least at thebeginning of the Jane-change, sees herself as no longer beautiful;because both actors and characters are. But she learns to accept whatshe can't change, and appreciate Jane's lovely features. With this shetranscends her super-superficial mindset, and self-perception. Once Deb comes to terms with the Jane life, she makes the consciousdecision to accept her body shape, rather than change it, for thereasons stated above. But Deb-Jane is still Deb, so she plays aroundwith her wardrobe, make-up and has fun. And I say, good for her! Sheshouldn't be considered somehow un-feminist (even though feminismsimply = equality) for doing so, if she wants to; it's her body now!Old Jane didn't want to do that stuff, which is fine. Women shouldn'tbe penalised for wearing lipstick, nor should they be for acosmetic-free face.SOME MORE PROSDeb-Jane has a great energy about her: she's effervescent, funny andbecomes increasingly more thoughtful and selfless as she faceschallenges and crossroads that unleash these characteristics. Herincredible intelligence makes her extra-extraordinary, as she fights(and most often wins) for the little guy and shows not all lawyers aresoulless, at least in the fictional world! All of the characters mature and develop with the show, and make forsome very lovable, irreplaceable personalities. Each episode has heart-warming, albeit sometimes a little lame (but then, I'm cynical),segments and will leave you feeling better than before. The cases alsoallow for social commentary and some clever manoeuvres on Jane's part, often exploring the sentimental, the quirky (and sometimes absurd). BUT...Don't get me wrong - it's not perfect. There's a formula and sometimespredictability to it, like all these shows have, and a few characters Iwould like to see trampled by antelope (the guest starring of KimKardashian was just demoralising to the viewers). The cases and theirconclusions can often be wrapped up in too neat a bow, but it'stelevision! Leaving the audience with closure and comfort is part ofwhat makes this show so enjoyable. It's also not the most razor sharpstoryline, the premise seeming very silly, but it's meant to belight-hearted and enjoyable. Not all shows can or SHOULD be likeDexter; that would not be good for the psyche! Overall, the PERFECT show to watch when you need a break and a moraleboost, but always a great choice, unless maybe your fictional violence-obsessed boyfriend is with you.

Fun and fluffy

This show is fun if you're looking for something light as a puff pastryand not too accurate on current U.S. law. It has the creative premisethat a model died and wound up in the body of a slightly frumpy, brilliant lawyer. The only not-quite issue I have with it is that a lot of the actorshave crazy faces(particularly Jane and Deb). When they're sad or happyor something, their eyes get huge and they open their mouths kind ofwide in odd grins or sobs. It's not bad acting per se, but rather howthe show is (over the top and light). So, I'd recommend it. It's fun if you're looking for something easy anda bit quirky to watch.

Wonderful

This review is from: Drop Dead Diva: The Complete First Season (DVD) I had to travel to another country for work alone, I wanted a season that was easy to watch. Before going to bed each night I would try to watch one episode but it would turn into 2 or 3. Always left me with a good feeling when I turned it off.
