Good MovieCompared to all the other trash that is in the theater, this is head and shoulders above most. The critics don't like it because it does not have enough action --pornography, profanity, loss of dignity, drugs, cigarettes, and alcohol. It gets right down to where people live with love enough for others that they are secure in their faith to the point they risk their lives to show it. |

True StoryAgain Hollywood critics have put its usual hypocritical spin of rejection on a Christian movie. This movie is moving and wonderful showing the true Christian ideal of loving someone who had killed your father. Hollywood talks of such things but never does them. |

disappointedThis review is from: End of the Spear (DVD) the DVD arrived on time, no problems there but unfortunately it was scratched. It froze and skipped repeatedly through out the movie and we had to bypass whole scenes just to keep the movie moving forward. Disappointed, will never buy a used DVD again. |

Excellent movieThis review is from: End of the Spear (DVD) This is a fantastic story! It is a true story which makes it even better. There are a few subtitles that can get a little difficult to keep up with, but overall a really great story. family friendly except perhaps for the scene in which the missionaries get killed, but it is kept very violence free. I don't remember any blood, but there may have been a little. |

Total transformation. This is what I call a moving picture.I was lucky to see this film very early in the summer of 2005. I wasstunned by the commitment of these missionary families. It may bedifficult to believe in something as a calling, but I think thatthere's no better word to describe the motivation of these people to godeep in the amazone jungle to try to reach a tribe which is totallyruled by fear and vengeance. They strike me as ordinary people who giveup their ordinary lives, because God had spoken to them in some way.The determination of those families is great, they don't give up evenwhen it cost the lives of their beloved. It's hard to not see the handof God supporting and comforting them, just to move on. The result isawesome, a total transformation. Where fear and vengeance ruled, nowlove is at reign. The film is lively, which is enhanced by the different views from theanthropologists, the missionary families, the waodani and the civilizedpanama tribe people. It's amusing to see the anthropologists amazed bywhat they're studying. It all happens right under their noses, but theystill don't seem to get the point. Or maybe the point may not be in theconclusions of their scientific approach... |

Glad I saw itGo see it, although I felt it was poorly edited. There's more to the story than shown in the movie. I don't recall ever hearing God or Jesus' names spoken. I came away more affected by the deep, loving relationship between the narrator and his father than the fact that five missionaries were martyrd and that brought salvation to this vicious tribe. Again, I think that this story is so awesome and that it evolved over such a long period of time that to edit it down to two hours diminished it. However, it deserves to be seen. |

Completely missed the pointThis movie is obvious religious propaganda, paid for by organizedChristian religion. This film is written from a Western point of viewand fails to see or even address that other cultures, like the Waoranihave different cultural beliefs and that these beliefs may also bevalid. Why should we homogenize the whole world to believe in God(Waengongi) and his son? How is this belief relevant to this tribe andtheir way of life? Does this belief really make them better people? Isthe way they are living wrong? What constitutes murder in our culturedoes not necessarily hold true for all cultures. Our disgust for theWaorani killing each other and our need to "save" them, like they'rechildren, is just Westerners, once again, feeling morally superior tothe rest of the world. It fails to address the larger issues at handhere like whether or not the missionaries should be there at all withall their moral superiority. Also the fact that these missions pavedthe way for the oil companies to come in and steal and devastate thesetribal lands. I sat through this whole movie and I found no redeemingvalue in it at all. In this day and age, I would expect more in-depththought from a film. |

Moving drama of a true storyThis review is from: End of the Spear (DVD) Amazing movie based on a true story that portrays the true story of missionaries whose faith in God and love for the native people they were trying to reach is one that will move your heart. A story of the power of forgiveness at its best. Best viewed by teens and adults unless parents talk with older children about content. Great movie! |

Great story poorly toldI had heard of Mincaye and the story of Jim Elliot & Nate Saint before. It is emotionally gripping and nearly unbelievable in its portrayal of the power of forgiveness and love. I was disappointed by this movie because of several miscues in casting and directing. I loved the boy who played young Steve Saint. I could watch him all day. He was marvelous. I couldn't, however, understand the casting of Nate Saint. He was not believable, nor did he have the requirements necessary to portray such a great man of God (intensity, compassion, love for the character). I thought the story got muddled along the way, and at several points, even though I was familiar with the story, I got lost as to the motivation of the characters. I thought the love of Jesus was downplayed, therefore it did not appeal to me as a Christian and I think the story line was too unclear to be appealing to a non-Christian. Sad to say, End Of The Spear didn't hit the mark for me. A better movie would be Beyond The Gates Of Splendour for the better re-telling of this story. |

historically extremely inaccurate and Christian-biased movie''End of the Spear''is a movie that should bring shame to all good people. The movie bluntly repeats the story that has happened for ages and ages. It promotes (U.S.) Christian views at the expense of the values and beliefs of a native people (in this case the Huaorani). An unknown and beautiful people have now been stigmatized through this movie to be a ruthless killing tribe of primitives whereas the Christian missionaries in the movie are depicted as angels with all-American beliefs. The Huaorani, while protective of their ancestral lands, have never been an utterly aggressive tribe. Haven't we learned from our countless examples from the history books (at least those that reveal the truth) that when a Western civilization meets a natural people they usually end up dominating them without respect for their own values (I refer to the countless North American native peoples that have been subdued through ages of white (Christian) domination for example)? The Huaorani are their own civilization adapted to living in the central part of the Ecuadorian Amazon, why did the missionaries have to come in at all? People should learn to respect that there are, and always will be, different religions, races and belief systems and that homogenization of these is not to be wished for. So, cinematographic characteristics aside, this movie should be remade with historical accuracy in mind. It would look very different! |

A True Christian Story Told In A Mature and Measured WayFinally Christian film making has matured. For so long films by Christians about Christians suffered from low budgets, preachy heavy handedness and cheesy writing. End of the Spear breaks through the stereotype of Christian films being virtually unwatchable. The story is moving and compelling. Critics who still hector the film as being "preachy" have to be hard core anti-Christian in their bias because this film mentions the gospel message almost as a side note. This is a magnificent true story of forgiveness and redemption as the families of slain missionaries extend forgiveness and compassion toward the tribe that committed the terrible deed. An outstanding film. |

An Awesome StoryThis is an excellent true story of love, forgiveness and living one'slife for Christ to the fullest. This movie defines what Jesus meant by"the greatest love is shown when people lay down their lives for theirfriends." It also shows how God can radically change our lives nomatter what age we are and how settled we have become. i can't wait forthe DVD to come out. Be sure to check out the website -www.endofthespear.com for more info. There is also information on adocumentary that goes along with this story. I also highly recommend 2books on this story. "Through Gates of Splendor" and "Shadow of theAlmighty" by Elisabeth Elliot also tell this story. |

Touching and powerfulI don't usually write reviews for movies unless I can give them a tenstar rating. This film would have earned ten stars for the messagealone, even if it hadn't been so well-done. Technically, End of theSpear was well-directed on all points. Chad Allen gave an excellent, believable performance as Nate Saint, and later, Steve Saint. LouieLeonardo was simply stunning in his role as Minkayani, and made a realimpact on the whole movie. This technical excellence, though much appreciated, was only the icingon the cake. The true substance of this film is in the message that ittells in such a way that it is inescapable, and yet draws the world in.Though I don't believe the name of Jesus was ever mentioned, thesacrifice, forgiveness, love and redemption unashamedly portrayed inthe story can't be mistaken as anything but a message from God. Thestory, that of the missionaries and of the Waodani, is sometimesbrutal, and it was not softened or minced in any way. The violence waswell-handled, and though I wouldn't recommend a young child seeing themovie, it could have been far more graphic. Acting, music, the storyline, the scenery-- everything combined to makeEnd of the Spear one of the most moving films I've ever seen. But thereare two scenes that really stand out in my mind. The first is when themissionaries are killed by the Waodani. It is played out in slowmotion, which makes it very intense and also very effective. I guesswhat really got me was when, after watching his friends brutallymurdered, the dying Nate Saint tells his killer, "We are your friends."(in their own language of course) Then there's the scene near the endof the movie where Minkayani takes Steve Saint to the spot where hisfather was killed. From the revelation (Minkayani's scream, "I spearedyour father!) to Steve Saint's powerful line, "You didn't take myfather's life... he gave it." It had me in tears. End of the Spear is a film truly worthy of the golden story it tells, and I only hope it succeeds in touching the world as much as it touchedme. |
