funnier than the simpsons

yeah, i said it...its funnier than the simpsons, im not knockin the simpsonsat all but i cant think of 10 simpsons episodes that keep me laughing sceneafter scene for a whole half hour, like every episode of familyguy...simpsons has been around longer...if family guy wasnt so politicallyincorrect it would rival the simpsons sooner or lateri love stupid humor like peter poking an alligator just to wind up gettingattacked by a koala bear and death is one of the best characters ever. italso has a lot of obscure movie references (trainspotting) and politicalhumor...who could hate it? dont be that guy.

Funny, but also something of a one-joke pony.

"Family Guy" is the illegitimate love child of "The Simpsons." It'sstructured upon similar roots but is far more crass, crude and raunchy.Whereas "Simpsons" has universal appeal and can be seen as familyentertainment, "Family Guy" is very American in nature (I never saw itaired on public TV once in Europe) and for adults. As such it's spawneda huge cult following. There seems to be some waging war between "Simpsons" fans and "FamilyGuy" fans. No one can seem to agree to like both shows. Personally, Ifar prefer "Simpsons," but will admit "Family Guy" has its good traits. For one, it can be very funny. Secondly, it's daring -- which is alwaysgood. The flipside of this is that it's really just a bunch of crude gagswithout any of the political commentary that "The Simpsons" has. It'snot as frequently funny as "Simpsons" and the laughs don't hit as hard. The characters aren't as catchy and some of them seem recycled fromvarious other programs on TV.My biggest beef is that the show isn't nearly as clever as "Simpsons"in the way it balances comedy, satire, politics, emotional conflict andso on and so forth. It's more or less scattered gags in a plot lessworld - whereas "Simpsons" has a strong focus and always introducessurprisingly strong story lines. (Well, through the first ten years orso, anyway.) Overall this isn't the horrible show "Simpsons" fans willhave you believe but it does lack the stronger elements that "Simpsons"boasts continuously. If you're just looking for some funny sight gagsand so forth, "Family Guy" is worth watching -- just don't expect theNext Best Thing.

It's crap.

A cheap knock-off of The Simpsons and The Critic, with lines that aren't asmuch "humor" as they are "vague pop-culture references". The fact thatthesereferences are inserted into what is otherwise a bland cast of charactersdoes not make them funny in and of themselves. Ultimately, Family Guy is aone-trick pony for couch potatoes that watch enough TV to recognize obscurethings from their favorite TV shows, commercials, and movies. I recognizemost of them myself, but my recognizing them makes them no more capable ofsaving this worthless show.

An Excellent Adult Cartoon

You cannot compare "Family Guy" to "The Simpsons". The only thing they havein common is that they were both on FOX and that they areanimated."Family Guy" is for the adult with no-holes barred, sometimes black comedy. This series tackled everything, and did it from a really cerebral approach.Peter Griffith, the head of the family is not dumb, he's just "here" dealingwith life as it comes to him daily. Lois, his wife came from the upper classbut you'd hardly ever know it. His eldest son Chris is slow but artistic, his Daughter Meg is smart but not drop dead gorgeous, his dog Brian is thesmartest of the household and his baby, Stewie is a mad scientist intraining who is bent on destroying his mother for bringing him into thisworld. Dysfunctional? Maybe. Hilarious, you bet. This show reminds me of what the Farlley Brothers would have done if theymade a weekly cartoon series. Nothing is beyond touch here, so if you have athin skin, get offended easily, then this is NOT the series for you. If youlike tongue in cheek humor, making fun of everybody and everything...you'vefound your pot of gold in this series. I love this show.I'm glad the FOX Network took a chance with this, but currently the seriesis re-running on "Cartoon Network" as part of the "Adult Swim" block andthere is where it should have always been.

the most annoying show i have ever watched.unnecessarily racial and obnoxious i get a headache from this showThe only characters that are interesting is Brian the dog and Stewiecan be slightly entertaining. I am not just judging this show over aone course view. I have seen it many many times.Terrible terrible show with a bad sense of humor. The only positive thing is i like the use of the flashbacksDon't waste your time because you WILL be disappointed. That is all ihave to say

The Funniest Cartoon Ever

This show had everything and is quite possibly the funniest animated showever made (including anime such as Dragon Half, Golden Boy and IppatsuKikimusume). The only other possible candidates that come to mind are TheSimpsons (in it's 4th and 5th season golden age) and Stressed Eric (alittleknow British cartoon which I have only seen a few episodes of in it'sbastardized, redubbed, American form.) I'm sorry to make the same clichedcomparison to the Simpsons but it really is the only analogy that makessense seeing as they're contemporary Fox cartoons targeted to the sameaudience with similar characters and humor, not to mention, as I saidbefore, they are probably the two funniest cartoons ever made. But FamilyGuy is certainly not a rip-off of The Simpsons, even though it is clearlyheavily influenced by it, if anything it is a successor to it (seeing asFamily Guy came on the air at the same time that the Simpsons started tolose its brilliance). Peter, Lois and Meg may be very similar characterstoHomer, Marge and Lisa, but Brian and Stewy are both incredibly unique.Family Guy's humor is also truly it's own, getting an equal number oflaughsfrom pop culture satire, shock value and the just plain weird. Itessentially relied on the surprise created by juxtaposing opposite, suchasfirst featuring a joke so offensive that you couldn't help but laughdefensively and then immediately following up with an obscure quote fromVoltaire. Even the extremely fast pace of the show was used to create anopportunity to do the exact opposite of what was expected, such as in oneepisode (Wasted Talent) when, as usual, jokes were flying at the rate of3or 4 a minute and then suddenly everything stopped with a 1:30 min. clipofPeter repeating the word "ow" after scraping his knee. When I watchedthis Iremember being my confusion at the fact that they were wasting so muchtimeto essentially dead air escalate until I was actually rolling on thefloorlaughing at the lack of a joke; the longer it went on the more time I hadtoappreciate just how hilarious it was that this show would intentionallydosomething so insanely unconventional. This was a truly amazing cartoon, andthose who dismiss it because of the sometimes extremely offensive jokesaren't watching it correctly.

where improbable can be good

There always has to be a show about a family where the dad is a workingstiff and not exactly the world's smartest person. Think Archie Bunker,Homer Simpson, and now Peter Griffin. I haven't seen every "Family Guy"episode, but what I have seen makes me nearly die laughing. The showfocuses on the Griffin family in Quahog, Rhode Island, who always getinto loony situations due to dad Peter's moronic attitude. Lois is thewife who always tries to right Peter's mistakes, Chris is the sexuallytensed-up son, Meg is the daughter with a valley girl attitude, Stewieis the baby who apparently wants to take over the world, and Brian isthe dog who's smarter than any of the humans. I gotta say that thisshow has more stuff relating to sex than any other show that I canrecall. My favorite episode was either the episode where they have to hide outin a hick town, the episode where Peter secedes from the United States,or the episode "North by North Quahog" (especially the part where theywatch "The Passion of the Christ II"). True, virtually everything thathappens on "Family Guy" is completely improbable, but in a good way.You won't be able to contain yourself if you see even one episode.Hilarious.

DA BOMB!

This show is so awesome! I love Mr. Weed (the name alonecracks me up) and Stewie. I love that line in "Brian in Love" wherehe says, "You're urinating!" Everyone on that show (I meancharacters) is great, especially Tom and Diane.I have a question for you guys (pardon if this was already asked bysomeone): What's your favorite flashback moment? Mine is the"Huck Griffin" moment; don't ask me why though. My favorite episode is "Love Thy Trophy.""Hey kids, I'm Santa Claus. Just practicing for Christmas.""But, you're white."Anyway, the one guy who was really weird was the guy in theepisode where they move to the South."Hey there, Muscley Arm." That guy.All right. That's it for me.

This is a good show, even though it can be stupid in a lot of areas.

I know I am going to get a lot of crap about saying these things aboutthis show, but I don't care. Basically, I like this show. I like theway it rips on celebrities and modern events as well as other TV shows. These jokes are done with Scrub-Style fantasy sequences, which I thinkare the best sequences on the show.I would have to say that the earlier episodes are better than the newepisodes. In the new episodes, the show trys to be too funny. Usuallyyou don't mind this, but it can really get to be annoying in someareas. In the episode where Peter gets a free tour of the beer brewery, there is a really annoying scene. After he finds the golden ticket inthe beer, he runs to his house, but he trips outside. He then sits downand repeats "..Owwwwwwwwwwwwww" over 5 times. Every time I see thismoment, I say to myself, "I want my 35 seconds back". This is doneagain later in the episode as well. This is just one example of theshow trying to be too funny. If it wasn't for Stewy, I wouldn't watchthe show. I watch the show for him. I can't really tell you how funnyhe is, but you should watch the show to find out what I mean. Stewy'sjokes are clean, sudden, and funny. So again, the older episodes are a lot better than the new episodes. Ijust wanted to put my opinion out there.

Simpson Who?

So before Family Guy i pretty much settled on The Simpsons because theywere the only watchable adult animated show(don't get me wrong I loveThe Simpsons but it was getting a bit old) but then in 1999 a greatmaster named Seth Macfarlane came from above shared with us hiscreation Family Guy and it was like a match made in heaven, I mean ithad my crude humor of tasteless jokes so a I got addicted watchingevery episode and every rerun they put on TV.And after a while I found myself repeating every single joke in my headand to my friends and forcing them to watch every episode with me. Andthen came the dark ages. Family guy got CANCELLED and I went into shockand bought every family product ever made and of course all the DVD'sand overdosed a couple of times by watching a whole series in onesitting again and again. Then one wonderful morning when I was finally starting to stop or atleast cut down on my Family Guy watching dozes I got the amazing newsthat they were bringing them back because of amazing DVD sales. So youcan Imagen I was stoked and when it came back on it was like it hadnever left. So now couple years later I am still addicted and watchevery episode every week religiously but I am not as crazy as I used tobe.P.S to answer your question no I don't have life.

Why?

Why did they have to cancel this show? This was like The Simpsons withattitude! I loved this show! It was like a South Park that was suitablefor broadcast TV. It pushed the limits, but not to the point of protest. It was flat out funny, if stupid. I laughed so hard when a teenage Peter ina flashback asked his teacher why the dinosaurs went extinct, only to hearhis teacher say, "Because you touch yourself at night."Fox seriously needs to toss out its Married by Joe Millionaire at CelebrityBoot Camp garbage and bring back Family Guy!

"Brilliant" comes to mind

These shows will always be compared to The Simpsons, since that was thefirst really good animated satire made for television. Some really goodones, like South Park and Futurama has come along since then, but TheSimpsons is still the original. The creators of these shows know this, sothe shows that pop up have different ways of attacking society. Futurama, for instance, does it from a futuristic point of view, and South Park isalmost a bit political at times, but they are both GREATshows.I haven's missed an episode of Family Guy, and I just love the show. It'sjust really brilliant, and Stewie is one of the funniest and most evilcharacters I've seen in years. All character (except maybe Meg) arebrilliant, and I love them all. This shows angle on society is television, and it does a really good job at ridiculing it. No show is left untouched, and they have just started. One BIG part of Family Guy is the flashbacks. They are absolutelyincredible. My favorite is "I remember the last time I accepted a couponfrom a man in a chicken suit". They are so insane and wonderful that youjust want to keep them in your pocket and take them out on special events toshow your friends (the flashbacks).Well, just enjoy the show, I know I will. Yeay Seth MacFarlane!!"Must kill Abraham Lincoln..."

Brilliant

Show involves the antics of the Griffin family, which includes an evil babyand a talking dog,who is the smartest member of the family.Similiar to"TheSimpsons",this show is a riot to watch. The Humor is often crude but quitehilarious.I hope the show is on for a long time.

better than the Simpson's

just have to say that family guy is a breath of fresh air. theSimpson's was funny but is just getting old, they're on to their 18thseason now, so some new material like family guy does not bother me onebit. Family guy has some great characters, from the homicidal babystewie to a talking family pet, the humor just keeps on coming thestories are varied and the plot sticks, if something happens in anepisode, well it will stay that way in episodes to come Seth Mcfarlanhas created a real funny comedy so fox, stop editing and censoring andjust let have some real, un-censored anti-bush propaganda please p.sscrew George bush and America

Beating Futurama on the finish line...

The simpsons really are getting a little boring, despite excellent effortsfrom the writers. FG's real competition, is Futurama. It is obvious fromlooking at early pilots of FG that MacFarlane didn't get nearly as muchleech with FG and Matt Groening got with Futurama. But the only characterthat really suffered is Peter. Don't get me wrong, he's fun.. He's not veryun-origional. And while Futurama does not have any really un-origionalcharacters, the just don't have any as colorful as FG. I'm thinking ofStewie and Brian ofcourse. Stewie really is a classic. Diabolical littlegenious, future leader of the world, mocking people while they change hisdiaper "Yeeesss.. You like cleaning my poo don't you??" Brian too though, asynical, well-read snob, and full blown alcoholic. Meg really is what sheisin the show... Boring. But she does do it well :) There isn't much to sayabout Lois either. It's a close race, but I supose FG's warped humor justreally appeals to me.

It can be stupid, yes- but it's also very funny

Quite a few people insist that Family Guy is a rip-off of The Simpsons-it isn't. Sure, the whole dysfunctional family thing is incrediblysimilar to The Simpsons, and they ripped off quite a few jokes, but thestyle of comedy is generally different. Family Guy uses flashbacks andside-references, generally to effect. And yes, Family Guy can be stupid- but it's funny, isn't it?My favorite characters are without a doubt the diabolical Stewie andPeter (although the talking family dog comes close).A very funny show that doesn't deserve to be labeled as a paleimitation of The Simpsons as it has. Check it out.

We're lucky there's "Family Guy"!

The Simpsons will forever be the yardstick against which every familyoriented animated show will be measured. Futurama was an excellentlyanimated show, rich with creativity. South Park indulges in itstrademarkedvulgarity and judgment. King of the Hill, while not appreciated by all, illustrates the funny side of everyday life with a traditional simple man. Now, from the talented mind of Seth MacFarlane, arrives "FamilyGuy"!No matter what your age or personality, "Family Guy" will appeal to you.Theshow is full of wacky flashbacks and pop culture references that, if youunderstand them, will make your sides hurt with laughter, and if you don'tunderstand them, can still entertain you based on their absurdity.Furthermore, the political satire and somewhat sacrilegious aspect of theshow should not be overlooked. The characters on the show are individuals you would come across ineverydaylife whom you may not realize are ripe with hilarity. Whether it is yourintoxicated idiot friend [Peter], smooth talking ladies man [Quagmire],theattractive house wife [Lois], the dog that you're sure you've conversedwithabout theatre while sipping a dry martini [Brian], or even that baby youknow with a British accent whose primary goal is to take over the world[Stewie]. Clearly, the characters that are unique to this show are the dogand especially the baby. Stewie will, without a doubt, make you laugh outloud, be it because of his plans of world domination or those of killinghismother. It is interesting to note that Seth has said, to him, whencreatingthis show, Stewie was just an afterthought. It's funny that that slightafterthought is the most irreplaceable aspect of "FamilyGuy".After years of cultivation, beginning with his 1995 short "The Life ofLarry," and sequel 1996 short "Larry and Steve," Seth MacFarlane gave riseto "Family Guy" in all it's glory. While the final features of "FamilyGuy"are somewhat altered from his two original shorts [which I recommend everytrue "Family Guy" fan make an effort to find and watch], the basic premiseremains the same; an idiot drunk of Irish descent living in Quahog, RhodeIsland with this beautiful wife, three kids, and talkingdog. At this point in time I would like to clear up a huge misunderstanding.Contrary to widespread opinion, when investing your time in "Family Guy",you are certainly not receiving a Simpsons rip-off. This show is much moreedgy and fast paced, without crossing over into the radical crudeness ofSouth Park.Fox did impair the ratings of "Family Guy" by switching it's timeslotsconstantly when it was on air, which eventually led to it's cancellation. However, the opinions of Fox do not reflect those of the loyal fans ofthisshow. Most fans were confused and devastated, spouting Stewie'scatchphrase,"What the deuce?!" Recently we have received word, as of November 2003,thatthe return of "Family Guy" by March 2005 is confirmed, due to spectacularsales of the "Family Guy" DVDs. All of us devoted and obsessed fansanticipate a "Family Guy" era with sheer giddiness andenthusiasm.

The most brilliant piece of humor since the Simpsons

If the rest of the series is half as funny as the debut show after SuperBowl XXXIII was, the Family Guy could place itself up with The Simpsons andMr. Show as the brightest and funniest things on TV. The writing wasabsolutley brilliant. The Kool Aid guy bursting through the courtroom wallhad me on the floor. All I can say is I am drooling until the actual seriespremiere. Note to FOX, please play the pilot episode again instead ofWorld's Scariest Magic Trick Home Videos Revealed IV.

I'll be watching.

Well. We've only got two episodes of this show down here in Oz so far. I'vewatched both. It's a funny show. Whatever people say, it IS "the next Simpsons"... it'sdamned funny! The only difference in style I cn pick is that it's moresurreal... talking dog, evil genius toddler, &c. This is a good thing.Enough shows in the world are constricted by "making sense", and it's goodto see a show that isn't that way inclined. It's a bit like the "Dilbert" TVcartoon in that respect, e.g. weird things happening suddenly. So, in summary, Simpsons + Dilbert, with a touch of "Married With Children".(That is, the a** jokes.) But the parodies it does are dead-on (I cracked upat William Shatner) Watch it. I am.
