Great thrillerThis review is from: No Way Out (Amazon Instant Video) I saw this movie when it first came out in the theaters and I fell in love with it, all of the characters were believable, and the suspense still gets to me when I watch it even now. |

Costner-Good acting-will miracles never cease? This is a great suspense thriller. Costner is 100% believable throughout, as are Hackman (as always!) and the rest of the cast. I was completely shocked by the ending. Great film!P.S. Why not five stars? Low rewatchability. |

A Real Inteligent ThrillerThis is a powerful film filled with high tension and intrigue that is done quite well better than most in the genre. And by no means whatsoever is Kevin Costner one of my faverite actors and to me most of his films are dull and boring except for this one and THE UNTOUCHABLES. But i must admit he pulled off a credible performance as a naval hero who takes on a Pentagon job and lands in hot water when he is entagled in a murder conspiracy involving his boss(played rather subdued by Gene Hackman)and by untalented actress Sean Young who is so annyoning in this film i was actually glad she got knocked off in the first half hour of the film in the tradinatonl Hollywood style. Terrifc on foot chases thougout the offices of the Pentagon to the streets of Washington D.C when Costner was being pursued by secret service agents. A great story backed by decent performaces make this story about an innocent man caught in a complex web of romance, murder, and corruption a sight to see But the surprise ending was unexpected and was out of step with the entire film. |

It's philosophy, not Action or politics!I think y'all are missing the point of this movie - especially those ofyou who think the ending should be dropped. In the end, the questions we are left with are those of ethics andmorality: if I use false or fabricated information to arrive at a trueanswer, am I wrong? Should I be punished? Should I not pursue theconclusion? If I fight against a cover- up, but all of my otherrepresentations are false, should I be trusted or believed in my oneinstance of honesty? Should I be allowed to get away with mytrespasses? This movie challenges the viewer to reflect on these issues, whichwould not exist without the current ending. Finally, this is Kevin Costner at perhaps his most perfect, lusciousmoment. Worth seeing once! |

Way OutThis film has got it all, from the excellent story (a remake, actually), fine acting from Kostner, Young, Hackman, and especially the highly underrated by steady working Will Patton. The plot twists will keep you guessing, right up until the end, which itself is ambiguous. If you like suspence, this if the film for you. OK on DvD or on TV. No real need to see this one of the big screen. |

Quite goodThis is a quite good movie, which is unfortunately ruined by a terribleending. Had they cut out the beginning and the ending of the movie, Iwouldhave rated this higher. Even after having just seen the first sequence ofthe movie I wanted it cut out, but with the ending in mind I have no doubtthat it should've been left out. It's an intense, at times nail-biting,movie, but unfortunately the romance between Susan and Farrell is draggedabit too long, and the investigation is left with too littlerunning-time.All in all this is a movie worth a look.7/10 (8/10 if we leave out the beginning and the ending) |

Political ThrillerI remember seeing this when I was twelve and home one day and thoughtit was brilliant. Gene Hackman can pull off any role and his portrayalas Defense Secretary David Brice really won me over! Kevin Costner wasabsolutely gorgeous when he was younger and isn't bad now. Sean Younglooks crap these days but was really beautiful back when she wastwenty-eight. Tom Farrell is a navy officer who gets posted at thepentagon and is to report to the secretary of defense David Brice. At aparty one night he see's a very beautiful woman across the room. Hername is Susan Atwell and she is having an affair with the secretary. They go to her best friend's place Nina Beka, played by a thirty-twoyear old Iman. The scene in which they're in the limo together and arealready getting their clothes off is actually quite raunchy. And SeanYoung had a great body back then so she pulls it off well. During theiraffair he asks her numerous of times to leave the secretary but shewont. During fun and games she takes a Polaroid of him which hescrunches up and chucks under her bed. During a fight between thesecretary and herself Susan is killed. The secretary devices a ploy toframe someone. The Polaroid image is found but seems to be ruined. Theteam in the Pentagon try to regenerate the photo. They can make out aman and they decide that he who is in the Polaroid is the killer. SOTom has only a few hours to do something about it. Will he be framedfor the murder of the woman he loves or will he escape and prove thesecretary the KGB mole? Watch it and find out it's a great film! If youlike Sean Young I recommend her in 1991's "A Kiss Before Dying" which Ionly saw only on television days after I saw "No Way Out" ontelevision. |

Extremely disappointingCompetent actors in a partly interesting plot that's been finallyruined by an unbelievable "stupid" ending!Let me give you some examples of that totally unconvincing script: Acall girl (Sean Young) is driving around in the limousine of theMinister of Defence of the United States of America while having sex onthe backseat with a marine officer (Kevin Costner) she met at the USPresident's dinner party an hour ago for the first time in her life! While driving the couple around the US Defence Minister's chauffeurthinks that this is very amusing! Sorry, but who really think that thisis the way they live in Washington???? In another scene the Minister of Defence (Gene Hackman, who is the bestactor) talks about top secret subjects while having his feet on thedesk and holding his hand onto the telephone. Who is on the other endof the line? The Minister did not not finish his call, and he did nothung up. We don't know. Does he? Where do the witnesses, who stillcould recognize Farrell (Kevin Costner), suddenly disappear shortlybefore the climax takes off? They were a first-rate-danger for nearly10 minutes of movie time, but then...? No explanation! Finally Farrellwrites the name of one of the CIA agents on the computer print, wherethe golden box is listed, that obviously never had been a present froma foreign politician to Brice (Gene Hackman). What shall that piece ofpaper proof? It simply proofs that as soon you start thinking about the plot itturns down to dust. As somebody else stated: "No Way Out" is a boringand extremely dated movie. It is a total mystery to me that it finds somany die hard fans here on IMDb. |

Excellent thriller - it's strengths outweight it's weaknessesTom Farrell is offered a job within the Defence department under Brice, thesecretary of defence. When the two begin seeing the same woman, Farrellisforced to do so quietly so that Brice doesn't know. When Brice finds thatSusan is seeing another woman he accidentally kills her. In order tocoverup Brice's involvement, his aide Pritchard engineers a theory that the"other man" in Susan's life was the one that killed her and that he is alegendary Russian spy. In order to keep control of the investigation,Farrell is put in charge of the investigation and is faced with clues thathe knows will eventually lead to him. With the set-up closing in on himhemust race against time to find a way out. This is a remake of The Big Clock, with a modern political set-up. Thestory is well set-up with only some misgivings in the first 30 minuteswherethe roots for the story are developed. Once the real story starts it isvery good and it moves with a real thrilling pace, building to two endingsone very powerful and with a feeling of being trapped, and the secondbeinga clever if not totally convincing twist. The feeling of being trappedandclosed in on is very palatable and is very well conveyed for most of thefilm.Costner is excellent here (a long time before his bubble burst) andHackmanbrings his usual class. The standout role is Patton's smarmy, spin doctorhomosexual Pritchard, he is truly excellent and manages to bring a senseofmenace to a quite feminine role.Overall an excellent thriller that is slow to start and has a low-keyending. The only problems are the slightly stretched plot and some of theaction being unexplained (why do the covert-ops guys keep chasing Costner?Iunderstood why for one of the chases but other ones just seem to happenforno reason). But 7 out of 10. |

A twisty-turny masterpieceA great eighties thriller that actually delivers on what it promises.Hackman, Costner, and Patton give great performances, with only Younglagging slightly -- the viewer is never entirely sure what attractedBrice to Susan in the first place. Perhaps the scene in the limo is anexample of her four-sheets-to-the-wind personality. It certainlyensnared Costner.Much has been said about the last five minutes of the film. It's agreat use of the "Yuri" red herring that runs throughout the film, though it doesn't necessarily add anything to the story, other than toreinforce the paranoia that no one really is who they seem, and no onecan be trusted. An ideal twist is one that isn't needed to enjoy thefilm -- here, it's not needed but only muddies the water in terms ofwhere sympathies lie.The one aspect of this film that truly doesn't stand up is the score. Ahorrible late-eighties synth soundtrack fills in where a BernardHerrmann-esquire orchestra would have done nicely and reinforced theHitchcockian nature of the story. Still, however, a well-done film. |

One of my favorites!15 years later, this one is still an awesome movie. First half of themoviedevelops at its own pace (Some call it slow), but shows the depth ofpassiongrowing between Costner and Young.(Spoiler Ahead)Once the murder happens, the movie kicks into high gear - a real grippingthriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The time pressure addsanoutstanding level of tension you can cut with a knife - or a straightrazor! The scene where Yuri is 'revealed' shows just how crazy people in powercanbecome, and the surprise twist at the end had me wanting to hit the rewindbutton in the theater if one existed. This one is a must see! |

Skip the last five minutesThis movie is great, but why did they ever add the last five minutes. Iwas OK with the story of Farrell being used by men at the top. I didn'tneed any surprising switch, especially one that is not necessary toexplain the story so far.The revelation at the end of for example "The Sixth Sense" is good. There you see something happening that helps you understand the movieyou have just seen. It leaves you puzzled for a while, replaying theentire movie again in your head. Nothing like that happened at the endof "No way out".But then again, the movie's great. |

A Murder Mystery in WashingtonNo Way Out, 1987 filmThis story takes place in Washington DC. Navy Commander Tom Farrell talks into a reel tape recorder about past events. Six months earlier he attended a party and met the Secretary of Defense. Farrell drinks a Stoly straight. He meets a woman with a low-cut gown. Tom and Susan visit a friend's apartment. Secretary of Defense David Bryce reads a report n public, then talks to Senator Duval. Later he visits his girlfriend. Commander Farrell visits her and is warmly received. Farrell will serve as a liaison between Bryce and other agencies. Farrell visits the Pentagon and meets the CIA representatives. There is another party at a Foreign Embassy. Farrell leaves with his girlfriend, they sail out to sea. Back home Tom must leave as Bryce arrives. [Complications.] Does Bryce suspect? Yes. He is angry, they fight. Susan falls down!Bryce consults with his personal Scott Pritchard. Scott goes there to tidy up the mess. [No rubber gloves?] Can they find this man? It will cover up the murder investigation. Farrell will head the investigation into the death of Susan Atwell. He is moved by this news. CID collects evidence. The operation runs on. "The Atwell woman knew Bryce." Farrell is warned about not following orders! The head of the CIA starts looking into this situation. That found negative will be analyzed. [Would taking a photo of it be faster?] Scott talks to Nina about the other man. "I don't know." Senator Duval is concerned about a new defense project. A car chase is used to provide action. Then a foot race through a neighborhood into a subway! "I'm gonna get you." Farrell warns Nina, then there is a fight. "A stupid, stupid thing." The investigation continues. Tom tells Sam who the man is! It is a cover-up. Tom wants the process slowed down. [Note the presence of telephone booths that date this story.]That witness sees "Yuri" in the building! The building is sealed. Another witness is found. TV news reports this activity. Can data be entered into the State Department's computer? Planting evidence? Tom figures out how to avoid the search. Scott is told about Farrell's request. [Note the very slow printer used for printouts.] There is another chase in the building! Doctor Hasselman was shot. Tom meets Bryce, then Scott joins them. Bryce will sell Scott out! There is a shot and another body on the floor. Tom sends a message to the CIA, then leaves for a meeting. There is a big surprise for the viewers! "Where else can he go?" [Does it seem believable? No, there are all sorts of background checking that goes on for Defense Department personnel, even political appointees.] This movie seems to be exaggerated sensational. This is fast-moving story with plenty of action. It seems to expose the personal politics of Washington officials. A defense department project (a huge submarine) gets pushed because of defense contracts, not on its intrinsic merits. Is there a warning here for the public? Not that they can do much about it (even if they had reliable information in the corporate media). This is based on a 1940s novel "The Big Clock" which was made into a movie before. Its not readily available. Was this version better than the original (which took place in a publishing house)?Margaret Truman wrote many murder mysteries that were set in Washington DC. None were made into movies, even for television. I wonder why? |

How does it end? When I started watching this I thought it would be as exciting as SunsetBeach or something like that. But after ten minutes I really enjoyed itandI thought the acting, the intrigue it was really interesting. And KevinCostner is really sexy... Too bad I fell asleep in the middle of the movieand didn't catch the end. So I have no opinion in that but so far I sawit'sgood. |

GOod and fast-paced, the action never dropsBut it is action with intelligence, not bubble-gum action like Hollywood always does. Costner, Hackman and all the cast is great, the ending is not very predictable. THis is the last good movie that actress Sean Young made. |

White House/Plame/CIA LeakDid anyone else notice the similarities betweenNO WAY OUT and the CIA-leak/Valerie Plameinvestigation. You have a spy, a mole, a biggie in trouble,a slimy, cocky right-hand manwho will give everything to protect his boss(Patton's character Pritchard even *looks* like athin Karl Rove). Also you have an investigationwhich the perp wants desperately to subvert. Also you have the ticking clock motif. Also you have animosity between different Washington cliques. Also Sean Young who gets murdered and Valerie Plamewho might get murdered (it's conceivable) are tall andpretty. Is it just my imagination or was thisfilm strangely prescient??? |

Wonderfully tense, fast-paced thrillerIf the studio is no longer producing videos of this movie, the studio should be closed down. It is one of best spy thrillers ever made, with a very convincing portrayal of Washington politics and intrigue in the defense and intelligence communities. It's probably Costner's best acting performance, and even his Russian accent is not that bad. The love scene in the limousine is great, almost as good as Gene Hackman's jealousy-driven murder of Sean Young and the manhunt with which the movie builds to a crescendo. Magnificent entertainment. |
