Using the System to Beat the System

This is an excellent show for several reasons. First of all, it istopical in regards to government controlling and monitoring our lives.Face recognition and license plate photo software is used to give outspeeding tickets in many cities, and the face recognition software isused at airports and train stations to search for terrorists andfugitives. The Machine exists, in one form or another, as most nationscompile their information in a database, whether it is with the FBI,CIA, Homeland Security, Interpol, etc. The story within the story is that the creator of the Machine wants tokeep his finger in the loop to prevent its misuse. He also discoveredthat there was a way he could use some of the information to helpinnocent people. Then the story within that story is that the creator, Finch, enliststhe aid of Reese (Cavieziel), a broken down former CIA agent, so thatthey can help people without alerting the mainstream police agenciesthat Finch has access to the Machine. Within that story is the corrupt cop (Fusco) that Reese blackmails intohelping him, and the mean cop who just wants Reese arrested, but whoseems to end up trying to help them too. Into all that, add the personal drama and redemption that Finch andReese are trying to work on in regards to their prior lives andpersonal tragedies. Then top it off with the unexpected circumstances of the people thatthey are trying to help every week, and whether or not they willeventually tangle with the wrong group and alert the Homeland Securitythat they are tapping into the Machine, and get themselves arrested orkilled. So there is a lot going on in this series, and also a lot of greataction and good performances. It is a dark show that reaches for thelight, and every episode tries to guide people out of harm's way.

So painfully stupid ***Spoilers

The fact that this show is so painfully, painfully dumb isn't whatbothers me. The fact that it's prime time and intended for an audiencewith an IQ of 60, is getting decent ratings and people seem to like itis. If you have an omnipotent camera system that records everything whywould you need Jim Caviezel to handle dirty cops who handle theirbusiness in public places without hiding their identities? It's ontape. No need for all the cloak and dagger - just edit it into coherentevidence then turn it over to the cops. If you're going to go throughall the nonsense, why wouldn't Jim Caviezel hide his face or his voice?It's on tape - everywhere. The discussion in the park where thecomputer nerd tells him how he gains access to the system - seriously?"There's cameras and mics everywhere. They hear and see everything andthere's an omnipotent computer that can sort that material for thegovernment. Also, I am the programmer and this is where I put the backdoor, number of digits in the password and it's a social securitynumber that probably belongs to someone I care about so it shouldn't behard to figure out..." - what??? Why is he pulling out a night stick to save an attorney who'sinterviewing a guy in prison lock up where it's completely impossiblefor him to gain access? Why would you shoot a guy point blank in theback of a bullet proof vest 6 times? Once or twice would've been fine.Common courtesy would've been to take a few paces first so the bulletwould have less punch. You're trying to make it look like an escape -not cripple the guy. How many painfully obvious plot points that justhappened do you have to repeat between two characters to make sure themouth breathers watching are still following something that wasn't thathard to follow in the first place? The female prosecutor casuallyconfessing in an alley to guys that work for her for no other reasonthan to bust her at the end - it's like the guy writing this is as muchof a drooling idiot as the people who like it.Rewatching Enemy of the State once a week would be time better spent.BTW - the opening scene of episode one; Tom Clancy probably has groundsfor a lawsuit if anyone can prove the screenwriter ever read WithoutRemorse. Actually, come to think of it, this entire show is WithoutRemorse - only for the mindless liberal who abhors reasoning.

Something new, something really good

Finally, something original. The whole premise of the show seems littlebit strange at times, but it makes sense. It's something we haven'tseen on TV in while. I like the actors that were casted for the show,Jim Caviezel looks good as an ex-CIA hit-man, his martial artssequences are credible, he looks like he knows what his doing. MichaelEmerson is perfect in his role, as an odd billionaire who is a genius.A strange team that solves strange cases, it has a mysterious vibewhich is good, it has a JJ Abrams signature all over. Nice bounce backfor him after the failure of The Undercovers last year.Definitely, a show that deserves a chance, it could become a hit, Iguess it all depends how the story unfolds beyond the opening episode.

Best Dramatic Series On TV, By Far.

Prior to watching the first episode I had thought it was no longerpossible for a major network to produce a first rate dramatic series.Getting all of the components together for an hour long weeklyproduction is admittedly difficult in 2012. It takes creativity, money,great acting and writing and good time slot selection to name but a fewrequisites for success. Midway through the first episode I knew thisshow was different. At the end of that first episode I only hoped theywould be able to repeat the effort. Almost unbelievably, everyfollowing episode had me enjoying the show even more. Even the guestactors have been superb. The regular actors now have their charactersdown flawlessly. I've never felt the situations presented to beanything less than highly creative and thoroughly enjoyable. Thepremise is based on actual NSA projects with algorithms and softwareand is not so far fetched as to be complete fantasy. There are some TVshows which you realize are pure folly and more often than not areeasily predictable. Not so with Person Of Interest. It always keeps youguessing. The action is realistic, the protagonists are allfascinating, complex and likable. It's easy to tell when actors reallyenjoy their parts, their efforts are natural and an easy sell. It'sbeen years since I enjoyed as splendid a show as this. I would oftenlook back on shows of the 60s or 70s and wondered why they couldn't beproduced today. Happily, I can now say CBS has found a way toaccomplish this. I don't write many reviews, there has to be acompelling reason for me to sit down and share my opinion. This seriesdeserves to be on for many years to come. Please CBS, don't let yourexecutives do anything to screw up the success of this show, let theactors act, the writers write and the producers produce. If you do, theviewers will continue to view in ever growing numbers.

I'm hooked awesome writing and acting

I wish I could give this higher than a ten! This show is so extremelygood! Jim Caveisal does in amazing job while Michael Emerson is doing agreat part acting. In the final episode my mind was blown with the cliffhanger they gaveme! For everyone who hasn't seen this show I won't say what happens.The writing and acting continually does well every episode. Everyepisode has an excellent plot with great action!Then they come back with an awesome second season! If u r up for acreative mystery with awesome acting look no further than Person ofInterest

Great show ;a new twist, Im hooked, but not new.

Did anyone here read or watch the movie Remo Williams it was written byRichard Sapair and Warren Murphy. It was a story about a man the had aneye on everything going on although not by camera so much but by peoplethat sent in tips. They did not know to whom they sent them to. Hefound out that just by info alone he could not do his job protectingpeople so he found his enforcement arm and ex-military named Remo andhad him taught martial arts from Chun. This is where it differs but Mr.Finch looks a lot like Mr. Harold Smith and Mr. Reeds looks like Remoand also fights like Remo but with weapons. I am looking forward to seewhere this show goes. I love it.

Great first season

The first season was excellent. Great character development, humorsuspense ,emotions, conflict and the very engaging banter between Finchand Reese. The 2nd season for me has been a big disappointment, Itseems as if Reese is on some downer medication and the great bondemotionally and respectfully between these 2 has taken a backseat to ashow about the CIA and how we are being watched. If I wanted to wanteda show like that I would watch the real thing! I hope the writers getback to what made the show great the 1st season, at least for me. Thisin my opinion has happened on many 1st year shows. Prison break, toname one, that became a show about breaks instead of the show abouthuman interactions. My theory is the creator/writer writes the 1st yearand then passes the writing to someone else the 2nd year and theychoose another direction. Still thanks for a great 1st year!

Run of the mill.

Precog in Minority, prophesying loom in Wanted and now predictivecomputer system.Not exactly ground breaking. So what is left to raise it above thecommon run ?Nothing.The pilot was suitably slick and gripping. so had to reserve judgementand yet reservations were glaringly apparent.Insipid second episode has confirmed them. Leads have presence but no chemistry. They play their parts but don'tcome together to create anything special.Action is good but good action sequences are a dime a dozen.Plot twists aren't hard to imagine. Gee, wonder whose number is goingto show up ? Same doubt as with human target. Namely, action will get really old,really quick and what will be left ? Even with overarching mystery there are going to be a lot of episodeslike the second one. How many legs can you see shot, how may absurdlywell choreographed fights before you tune out ? Wish them well. Thank you.

Lack of Interest

Christopher Nolan,Jonathan Nolan and JJ Abrams...let that sink in for asecondNow,these names are amongst the highly ratedwriters/directors/producers of Hollywood.You would expected them togive Martin Scorsese and his posse at 'Boardwalk Empire' a good run fortheir money as the new up and coming TV series of this fall butunfortunately it went surprisingly wrong. If your a fan of the Nolanbrothers 'Person of Interest' lacks the depth and the charisma the duousually brings to the big screen.So far,(I've only watched the firsttwo episodes),it seems the script was written over-night with a bottleof liquor and some cocaine to speed things up.It felt very diluted,withthe basic grasp of the compelling nature often found in the Nolan'sscreenplay.The shows theme runs parallel to '24','find the victim before the badguys do',that said it does stand on its own with a different twist tothe main story line(main being the key word here)As far as the acting is concerned Jim Caviezel seemed very stiff,notquite comfortable with his character.'cringe' is the word that comes tomind after almost every line he delivers,he tries his best but againthe poorly written script is his downfall,i'm sure/hope this willchange as the series goes onLost fans will be happy to see the return Michael Emerson to the screenstill somewhat as cryptic as our beloved 'Ben Linus'All and all its a 'tuesday evening' entertainment-the week has barelykicked off and there's nothing else to do so you'll probably end up onthe couch bored and staring at the TV-on the long run i can see itending up as 'just another cop show'

Absolute Favourite

When first hearing about this show i was skeptical, from seeing manyother shows/movies about one person saving the world in such afar-fetched manor.. i assumed this would be another cookie cutter withno originality.I am very pleased to say I was 100% wrong about my initial assumption.Since watching the pilot, this show has captivated me and I have becomeaddicted. Truth be told this is my first review. I have used thiswebsite very frequently since first being exposed to it. This this showhas motivated me to make an account and share the enjoyment that it hasbrought me, in the hopes that my 2 cents helps in any way for Person ofInterest to last for many seasons to come.I crave a good story, and there have been other shows that haveexcelled in that dept.(Dexter, Breaking Bad) that I enjoy. Yet there issomething about this show that I cannot get over, the writing, cast,characters, EVERYTHING! make this show addicting and my absolutefavourite.PLEASE CBS, KEEP THIS SHOW GOING! :)

Abrams' Genius meets Nolan's Class

With Jonathan Nolan and J.J. Abrams at the helm, I had greatexpectations from this show and it delivered in the best possible way.'Person of Interest' is a sophisticated, intriguing, intense thrillerwith an exciting plot that kept me on the edge of my seat. After '24',this is probably the only show that stands out in this genre.Jim Caviezel (Reese) plays an ex-CIA hit-man (which itself sounds cool)who is a tough guy but at the same time has strong feelings for hisdead girlfriend which he tries to suppress. Michael Emerson, who weknow as 'Benjamin Linus' from 'Lost', plays a scientist who hires Reeseto do his dirty work. Emerson, who is known to play complex characters,keeps up his end of the bargain by giving a flawless performance. Eventhough the show has just began, I can see Jim and Emerson sharing greaton-screen chemistry in the future (hopefully there is one).There is a vast difference between writing a screenplay for a movie anda TV episode. But, that did not matter since, Johnathan Nolan, makinghis debut in the TV industry, had great help in the form of Abrams, whohas been doing this day in, day out for so many years. Apart from thetalented writing, the show also showcased some riveting actionsequences, good editing and awesome visuals. The surveillance cam shotsadded another dimension to this show.'Person of Interest' has a lot of potential and I would hate to see itbecome just another crime show. I hope it continues to impress and getsa renewal soon.

Please stop the politically correct machine

To have any hope of finding this show entertaining one is required todo much more than suspend disbelief. I do that all the time whileenjoying all kinds of fiction. The problem is this show has such acascade of politically correct plot elements that they kept insultingmy basic innate intelligence. It kept jarring me back from a state ofsuspended disbelief to the worst of today's PC world that is onlyentertaining when it is the subject of satire. The acting was fine butthe writing is the problem. Too bad, it could have been worth watchingif it hadn't been written as if by a committee of suits not to mentionit is completely devoid of humor.

Person of Interest - I'm Hooked

"What happens when the one thing that keeps you centered in the worldis suddenly taken from you?" Even after the first episode we know verylittle about the characters. We have Mr. Reese, played by Jim Caviezel,who is a former government agent torn down by the loss of hisgirlfriend. Michael Emerson, formerly the contagonist Ben from Lost, isan eccentric billionaire genius, Mr. Finch, who created a supercomputer to isolate and identify potential illegal activity. Mr. Finchseeks out Mr. Reese in an effort to prevent the crimes being ignored bythe computer he built. The new CBS pilot, airing on Thursday's, is the latest brain child ofProducer JJ Abrams of Alias, Fringe, and Lost fame, and Jonathan Nolan,the co-screenwriter with his brother Christopher Nolan on The DarkKnight and The Dark Knight Rises, The Prestige, and the upcoming Man ofSteel. First impressions, this is a cross between Burn Notice andMinority Report. The show's tether to reality is the very real reaction of the world tothe events of 9-11. It is said that there is not a square block in thecity of New York City that is not covered by some sort of surveillancecamera; big brother in the big city, right? Well it takes this premiseto the extreme, whereas Finch's computer is able to predict majorcrimes and the people involved by watching the real life scenes of thecity unfold. As this computer was created to isolate major terroristthreats, it was also programmed to discard anything that does not fitthe spectrum of focus. Mr. Finch realized that the discarded data is as valid as the focusdata, but on smaller crimes. The challenge being, the computer onlyprovides one detail to the events it has witnessed, a social securitynumber. The premise seems confusing, but is in fact very simple and brilliant.Mr. Finch has a social security number. He does not know the what,where, why, or even how the person attached to the identifier isinvolved. All he knows is that the computer tagged them as a person ofinterest. This, of course, will have to make it through the threeepisode test. However, I can say right now I am hooked. I do not wantto give too much away, but the writing, acting, and directing isbrilliant. They have taken a movie style drama and turned it into atelevision show with endless appeal and possibilities.The characters have been set up in a strong base as well, lots ofsecrets to reveal, but enough for the audience to identify with. Thepilot episode also set up the branching of other relationships, such asa dirty cop who is spared in return for his assistance in the future.There is also a clean cop, played by Taraji P. Henson, who wants toknow who the hero solving these mysteries is.One of the high points of this show is the lack of violence. I rememberwhen I was a kid watching the A-Team I thought it was all violent. As Ilook at them now, I realize that no one ever died on the show. If theydid it was usually at the beginning and never shown. The case is thesame here. All of the 'victims' are shot in the leg. The two deathsthat did occur were barely shown, and left more to the imagination andthen confirmation in dialog. This is a refreshing change of pace. I amnot one to knock violence. The world is violent. The truth is it takesa lot more skill to not kill someone with a gun, which for me is notonly an intelligent writing, it is also a sign of story focus.So I am giving Person of Interest a high mark, and hope that you willgive it a try. It is definitely worth a shot.

great new show

I have been bummed lately with television, because I don't like talkshows, reality TV, judge shows and soap operas. Not much was left. Istarted watching POI at episode 3 and I am hooked! It is nice to see ashow that has a technological theme. I also think Henson is doing wellon the small screen, for her to be use to the big screen...such asJaden Smith's mom in Karate Kid. Every episode I have watched has keptmy attention and the hour passes quickly. What one Nolan bro did forBatman, the other has done for prime time TV. Revived! Pleased!Excited! Waiting for more! I hope for many more seasons of POI! CBS....bring it on!!!!!!

Really interesting

I first saw one episode in "Star World" and that too 15 minutes afterit started. Could not grasp it and the ads along with our sensor boardmade it unbearable.Then I got the whole season 1 in HD and was hooked to it till the veryend. It has the characteristics of every good TV show.Starts slow. Each day a new story but very subtly we get backgrounds ofeach character. I would go one step ahead would claim that thescreenplay is developed with utmost care and production value is veryhigh. The director has eyes for every detail.Then take the character of "Reese", initial few episodes he wouldappear to you as an invincible vigilante but the more you progress youget to know his weak spots; he too gets beaten down by skilledopponents, gets knocked down and these things made him more of a guywho is not 'superman' but a man with certain skills who stood forright.And, then the character of "Harold", even though every loose end istied till the season 1 finale we still don't know much about Harold; Iguess the director wants to play with him season 2.+ Good storyline, great character development, action and at times edgeof the seat thriller -A few episodes are boring

Quite Amazing

My wife is exceptionally sceptical of TV programs. She watched a coupleof episodes then wanted more/stayed 'up'! - a first! Whilst it is knownsuch (current technology) does not 'quite' exist the concept isbelievable. Of course we should be concerned how 'Harold' gets numberswithout his system working (not a spoiler) however anyone watching willhave seen that episode. The scope of the series is quite impressive andthe selected actors/actresses quite surprising as it all meldstogether. Maybe this will be better than even the CSI franchise and bythe looks of it, it could well be! Compliments to the creator andorganisers as they have done quite an amazing job of both 'connecting'people and making a series which should surely be second to none. No'goofs' and well though out episodes tell a story! Goof detected whenHarold rides on the motorcycle and in the next scene has a helmet -shame! Anyhow we know Zoe is in love with Reece, Harold with his 'ex',Carter will be involved with her new 'friend' except 'HR' might get tohim and Fuscoe might have a long term relationship. Michael

The Best TV Series America Has Ever Created.

After watching each episode, you'll see that, this series contains, thebest acts from the best actors (Jim Caviezel, Michael Emerson, TarajiP. Henson, Kevin Chapman), the best plot from the best writers (J.J.Abrams, Jonathan Nolan and many others), the best music from the bestcomposer(Ramin Djawadi), great actions scenes. This is a series youwon't regret watching it. It's full of thrill and excitement. Wellnowadays you can't find many series which can get 8.3 from critics ;)If you think that LOST & Prison Break are thrilling, so you will changeyour mind after watching this series. The main power of this series isthat, it's so powerful that, you fall in love with characters and youwish to be in their place, even if it's so dangerous. I promise you,YOU WON'T regret it.

Garbage

I watched half way through the first episode and turned it off. Cheesyconcept in the first place, a guy out to do good happens to run into aguy with the ability to know when people are going to die.I feel like this show is probably bought and paid for by the Americangovernment as a way to get people to get used to being watched 24/7 for"their own protection". I see little else to this than propaganda. Tome it is insane that anyone could watch a program where theprotagonists watch and listen to the person they are trying to save,learning intimate details about them. You should be completelydisturbed by voyeuristic nature of the program. I mean do theprotagonists listen to them when they are using the washroom? Do theylisten while they are doing other more private things, late at nightalone their homes? I honestly don't know how this show has such highratings, it is truly disturbing.

Give It Time!

I love the lead actors, Jim Cazaviel and Michael Emerson, who playReese and Finch in this post-9-11 world. Finch finds and bails Reeseout of jail and hires him to help protect Jessica Hanson in the firstepisode from being killed or killing. Unlike other crime dramas on theair, they don't play by the book which is refreshing. I hope they addmore female characters in to help explain Finch and Reese'sbackgrounds. I love Michael Emerson ever since his performance in Lost.As Finch, he's totally believable as the rich billionaire who wants tomake a difference and stop further horrible attacks such as murder. Wedon't know why he does it except how he felt after the September 11attacks in New York City but he realized how much or how little moneyand power. Finch developed a system to help track persons of interestbefore something terrible happens to him. Reese is perfect as a formergovernment agent disillusioned by the agency and the world to help himfoil further plots. I keep looking for the future for this show andhope it lasts a season.

Finally some quality programming...

J. J. Abrams has struck Gold with this show especially with JimCaviezel. The theme is interesting and the plots are fun to watch butit is what Jim Caviezel brings to the role that makes the show work. Itis his personality that is the perfect chemistry with the line of workthat his character is in. A man/woman in his line of work is a calmperson, they are actually not volatile at all, they are careful, theyare measured. A man/woman in his line of work cannot afford to beeasily emotionally affected by others. That does not at all mean thatthat person can't have a moral code in fact you have to have boundariesin that line of work or no one will hire you. But you cannot allowanyone to provoke responses from you, you must be at all times incontrol of you, you do not ever hand control of yourself over to othersby allowing them to dictate your responses. When you do respond tosomething it is careful, it is thought out and it is to accomplish aspecific end goal, it is never out of an emotional retaliatory sense.That sort of recklessness gets you and/or others killed real fast. JimCaviezel personifies these characteristics making for a flawlessperformance that really makes you feel as if this is real.But more than all that, Has anyone noticed there is all the classicelements of a comic book character style hero here? He works in secrethunted by authorities because of he is technically classified as avigilante. He has a sidekick who provides the support but has aphysical impairment which keeps him from being the hero himself. Reecehas an emotion past that scars him and drives him in his actions and sodoes his side kick. I mean I half expect detective Carter to come upwith a Bat signal to tell Reece when there is trouble. And then youhave the female counterpart they introduced in the episode with theFixer. None of this is intended as a criticism, in fact it makes itthat much more fun to watch. Most individuals in that line of work arevery independent thinkers. Most people on the average allow theirsociety as a whole to define for them what is right or wrong. People inhis line of work do not, their code is based on their own innerdivinations of right and wrong, based on what they really believe noton what others have told them to believe. That's why I gave this show10 stars.
