so bad i wasted 30 minutes creating an account to make this review.

basically she runs through the house the entire movie. and no onereally got the idea like she walks in the room and the toilet is on thewall bleeding? at the end of the movie everyone was flipping out askingfor money back, including me. just don't waste your time its not evenscary. it didn't even make any sense like even a girl was justwandering around and the guy is asking to play a game. what game? itwas just a waste of time it wasn't even scary either. the scariest partis when she is walking and the door opens and her dad walks in.honestly i was laughing because it was just such a horrible movie ijust cant believe i wasted my life watching an hour of that.

Ghosts? What ghosts?

IT was with trepidation that I stepped into a movie theater to watch'Silent House' yesterday at midnight. No, it was not because of themidnight attack by 'The Joker' on a theater in Colorado, the US,recently. It was because a movie-mad friend told me that the favorite place forghosts to hang out was in cinemas. A book he had read said ghosts fedoff the joys and fears of moviegoers. But after watching this horror flick masquerading as a ghost flick, Iwas more confused than frightened. The flick purports to be a ghost flick, with eerie string music, noisesemanating from weird nooks and corners, and the apparition of a girl ina summer dress. Then it switches to confusing viewers even more by pretending to be ahome-invasion flick. Finally, it settles on that bouncy Olsen chick's repressed memories ofher childhood sexual abuse coming to the fore. By the time viewers figure out what the movie really is about, theywould have been better off if real ghosts had really frightened them. What caught my eye in this flick was the seamless flow between scenes, that is, there was not a single cut in it. However, I found out thatthe movie makers had filmed 10-minute scenes and stitched them togetherto make it look uninterrupted.

... more trying than terrifying ... The nosy camera only manages to call attention to itself and make Olsen's annoying Tonya Harding crying jags all the more annoying.

Silent house keeps things a little too quiet...

I have been wanting to watch this film for a long time and finally gotto it the other day. I thought it was just going to be ghost story typefilm or something like Paranormal Activity but it turned out to besomething very unexpected! It had a lot of suspense despite itsshortcomings. It gets a bit old as the majority of the film is justElizabeth Olsen's character Sara wandering through a scary house.Elizabeth does a good job at being scared and crying her eyes out overthese scary sounds though! There are times it feels very BlairwitchProject. The film is shot entirely with a subjective camera, always atarm's length of the character. It just feels so low budget that youfeel like someone made it for a school film project or something, because of this you can't really get lost in the movie.Although the ending was out of left field, I liked this twist andthought it added to the film. The problem with it though was that itwasn't executing properly and the overall storyline had too many holesin it. It needed more too it, more flashbacks - something. After doinga bit of research on the film I found that is was actually a remake ofa Spanish film of the same name and that it was based on a true story. Not sure if that movie delved into the back story more or not… All inall it was a film that could have been really great, but too manythings made it feel like someone just took a camera and tried to createa movie over the weekend at their cabin.MEH, 5/10 For more film reviews check out Breakaway Dailyhttp://www.breakawaydaily.com

It's highly unlikely the shaky camerawork or most anything else about this flick will be recalled a year from now. (Full Content Review for Parents also available)

Boooh hahaha!!!!

More little girl ghosts huh? "Silent house" is at least interestingbecause the whole thing has been filmed (Or at least looks as if ithas) in one continuous shot. Now that's what the well worn out hauntedhouse genre needs. A New approach to things that is. But does the "realtime" effect off this flick work in it's favour? Or is it a majordistraction? Well, like all those shaky cam/found footage movies we get these days, the way the camera follows the main character around in this cansometimes get irritating. All those moments where you can't see whatthe bloody hell is going on will no doubt ruin the movie for some. Onthe other hand though I have too applaud "Silent house" for tryingsomething different (even if it is a remake off something I've neverheard off!). You feel as though your experiencing the fear the chick inthis is experiencing, just by seeing the little that she is seeing, andthe film is pretty damn scary because off this.Trouble is it also goes the stupid twist route so many scary movies godown, and the good stuff gets undone by its dumbass ending. At leastits trying. But "Silent house" just ends up as yet another OK creepymovie.

Fairly effective chiller ; Olsen embodies to a finely tuned pitch of believable angst and genuine terror.

SILENT HOUSE (2012) ** Elizabeth Olsen, Adam Trese, Eric ShefferStevens, Julia Taylor Ross, Haley Murphy. Fairly effective chiller withOlsen as a young woman in a sort of homecoming who is helping herfather get a piece of real estate ready for an impending sale and findsherself trapped when a home invasion occurs (or does it?) The real-timeone-take gimmick employed by intrepid married filmmakers Chris Kentisand Laura Lau (who adapted from a film by Gustavo Hernandez) is rathersmoothly transferred with impeccable camera-work by Igor Martinvoic yetthe premise taxes the nerves (and not in the way it should i.e.gooseflesh/hair-on-end spookiness) by the story's (anti)climax thatupends psychological horror instead of its ghost-story approach ofthings-that-bump-in-the-night in spite of its leading lady's full-onembodiment to a finely tuned pitch of believable angst and genuineterror.

Lolwut....

So I saw the movie Silent House last night and all I have to say is,did I get trolled or something? The movie plot made no sense. I thoughtthey were going on place with the movie and they took a whole differenttwist, and not the good kind of twist like a "wtf did they do" twist. Iwish I had the opportunity to never see this movie. I could have donesomething more useful with my time like play World Of Warcraft. I guessI was too smart for the movie or something because I see these dumbidiots writing good reviews on this movie -____- I think the directorwas tripping out on something when he/she wrote the movie. Don't seethis movie. I'd rather watch the Justin Bieber movie than this...

Hush now child, and don't you cry.

Silent House is directed by Chris Kentis and written by Laura Lau. Itstars Elizabeth Olsen, Adam Trese and Eric Sheffer Stevens. Music is byNathan Larson and cinematography by Igor Martinovic. A remake ofUruguayan film, La casa muda (The Silent House), story has Olsen asSarah, a young woman who finds herself locked in the abandoned familyhome she was helping her father and uncle to clear out before it issold. Soon Sarah finds herself pursued by an unseen assailant and shestruggles to make sense of what is festering in the house.Forget the gimmick that comes with the film, that of the use of "realtime" to give off the effect of one continuous take, it doesn't impacton how you ultimately will feel about the film either way. It comesdown to if you can buy into another haunted house movie whilstaccepting the outcome as being worth your time. Horror fans arenotoriously hard to please, even when something original happens along, such as the recent The Cabin in the Woods, a good portion of the horrorfaithful will remain displeased. Silent House is what it is, a hugelyefficient haunted house creeper that admirably builds suspense and thenshows its twisty hand. If you want fresh and exciting, and I keepseeing people write that "such and such" didn't bring nothing new tothe table whilst themselves not offering up exactly what could bebrought to said table, then it's very unlikely Silent House will fillyour horror hungry bellies.Coming from the makers of Open Water, it's evident that Silent Housewants to have realism on its side, it's stripped back for impact, witha less is more approach to its garnering of chills. With Olsenterrific, and she is, we are asked to put ourselves in that house andbe in her shoes to feel the terror. Not everyone can do that, obviously, but being able to do that considerably makes Silent House afar better movie than its lowly internet ratings suggest it is. Thescares are not over done, the music score is suitably sparse asclaustrophobia reigns supreme, the use of natural light impressive andthe camera glides about as an ethereal observer, technically it is avery effectively constructed haunted house picture. It's alsorefreshing to find the makers are able to use credible reasons forcharacters to be in and out of the house, this isn't about the dumbdecision making so often rife in this sub-genre of horror over theyears.Sadly the third act is weak as the scares, tech attributes andatmosphere subside, we land in familiar territory and the big reveals, whilst thematically potent and never to be scoffed at, lack the desiredimpact and the film closes down more on a whimper instead of theterrified scream the rest of the film deserved. A shame, because forthe most part this is a very good genre offering for those who have abent for such spooky/home invasion doings. 7.5/10

Silence isn't always golden

Silent House, directed by Chris Kentis and Laura Lau, the pair behindthe thrilling film Open Water, is a remake of the 2010 Uruguayan filmLa Casa Muda. The story centers on a young woman, her father and heruncle working together cleaning out and repairing an old lakesidefamily cabin; in the process ending up stalked, while "trapped" inside.Elizabeth Olsen, having received high praise for her performance inMartha Marcy May Marlene, gives a solid performance as the young Sarah. If her first two feature films are a sign of things to come, thenAshley and Mary-Kate's younger sister is well on her way toestablishing herself as an extremely talented actress on her way to avery successful film career. Sadly, the same can't be said for AdamTrese, who plays Sarah's father John, and Eric Sheffer Stevens, whoplays John's brother and Sarah's creepy uncle, Peter. Neither of thetwo men is capable of holding their own when sharing screen time withElizabeth; whether it's in delivering the dialogue or just acting out ascene. The most impressive thing about Silent House is that the movie appearsto have been filmed in one continuous take; running the entire 88minute length of the film. The problem with shooting the film in thisfashion is that not every scene works. In one sequence, we follow Sarahas she runs throughout the house trying to hide, and then escape. Thescene is well done, and is at times reasonably suspenseful. In otherscenes, however, the camera does more harm than good; such as poorlyfocused shots on the appearances of ghostly figures and the jostling ofthe camera as we run along with Sarah as she attempts to get away fromthe house. As someone who sees many movies, there's nothing that bothers me morethan when a director, writer, producer and/or studio thinks theaudience is easy to get over on. The biggest issue with Silent House isthat it was marketed incorrectly. The movie is not a horror film; it isa psychological thriller. If the film had been marketed as such, andwasn't done in the single shot format, I think the potential was therefor a decent movie. If the film had been made as a horror movie andfollowed through on that, I think it could have been better. As it is,Silent House is a major disappointment that never meets its potentialon any level.Grade: C-visit our site at www.twodudereview.com

Silent House dies a sudden and egregious death when the amateur players in Olsen's company, Adam Trese and Eric Sheffer Stevens, as her character Sarah's father and uncle, respectively, open their traps.

A breakout star last year for her work in "Martha Marcy May Marlene," Olsen spends most of the film hiding under furniture.

terrible movie

This is my first review. I just had to warn others to not watch thismovie. The two males in the movie desperately need acting lessons. Theyare totally unbelievable as is Olsen. Supposedly these three arerelated -- a father, a daughter and an uncle of the daughter.Laughable! The dialogue makes them seem like they just met each other. The daughter almost comes across more like a wife. The setting is evenlame. How can that be? They are visiting and repairing the "family"lake home but they don't even look like they've ever been there before! The tension is also very weak. You could care less whether Olsen makesit out alive. When you do get to the ridiculous ending in a very shortamount of time, it is so poorly executed in terms of flashbacks andacting that you feel duped into believing this was a scary movie. It isa silly movie and nothing more.

The cleverly and handsomely achieved gimmick compensates for troublesome motivation and suspension of disbelief issues to make this a genuinely fresh treat for horror fans.

First Half Interesting, Elizabeth Olsen VG Again

I watched this strictly on the strength of Elizabeth Olsen's amazingperformance in *Martha Marcy May Marlene*, but after reading up on theintentional use of the film making technique (the long shot or singleshot) and the source material (the Urugayan film *La casa muda*), I wasintrigued that the filmmakers, Chris Kentis and Laura Lau, were alsothe filmmakers of *Open Water* (2003), a film I found extremelysuspenseful. This film is not up to the standards of the prior work,IMO, but it did have moments that felt pretty terrifying. Olsen givesanother fine performance, inhabiting the character so much I didn'teven think about her prior work after the first five minutes. Choosingher for the lead was wise, she kept me involved all the way through, even when the ending devolved into what I felt was a more contrived"resolution." I would warn horror fans, this isn't strictly horror, inspite of its trailers, it's more psychological thriller. I will givethe filmmakers props for dealing with the psychology effectively (it'san area with which I'm familiar), but horror fans and "found footage"fans might be somewhat put off as the protagonist begins to realizewhat she's dealing with. I do hope Olsen will branch out beyond the"young woman in peril" films she's done so far, I think she hasexcellent potential. As for the film, if you like films withinteresting technical challenges used in the psychological thrillergenre, you may enjoy this. Or you may enjoy Olsen's performance. It isnot, however, going to be a film that everyone will embrace.

feel cheated

This is not so much of a review as a personal reasoning behind myrating. I couldn't bring myself to construct a critical discourse on amovie that took so much (I leave those efforts for films that inspire, either to great praise and admiration or anger and belligerence...likea late-stage venereal disease, this one only managed drain me of mywill to live), so my 'review' will be correspondingly flaccid. I'mgoing to give this film three stars...grudgingly. Very grudgingly. Italmost KILLS me to give it any at all, as the movie annoyed me muchmore than it did entertain me. But if I don't get started on why Ifound this film so annoying, then I might just manage to find the willto live again and briefly tell you why I'm throwing this dog of apicture three little bones (instead of putting it in a bag and throwingin the river). One bone (and the biggest and most deserving of them) isfor the lead actress. Elizabeth Olsen is a genuine talent and I hope tosee her in many future films. The second star is, perhaps notsurprisingly, for the casting agent(s)/decision people who picked herfor this film. She was the ONLY reason I didn't hit eject mid-film andI can't overstate how much of a pleasure she was to watch. She hascharisma and skill and I'm disappointed that this is the first film ofhers that I had to see. The third and last star goes to the whomeverwas responsible (with three directors and many other executive fingersin the pie it's impossible to tell) for creating a legitimately creepysetting, at least, in the very first few opening moments when all wasstill nice and sparkling clean and full of potential. Things gotmuddied and tired right quick. I could go on (had it not been for thesyphilis) gone on in detail about what doesn't work in this movie.Suffice it to say that neither story, nor direction worked. Period. They both sabotaged what this film could have been were it not for areliance on silly suspense-building and horror contrivances, a spat ofineffectual characters, a complete lack of any emotional buy-in for thelead character's fate (this has MUCH to do with the chosen directorialtechnique) and an ending which feels like the writer(s) just called itin after penning the main 'twist'. Lucy had 'some splaining' to do butwe were just left sitting on the bus looking out the window indisappointed confusion after the driver inexplicably pulls over, getsup, and silently exits into a cornfield in the middle of the night, never to be seen from again. This isn't to say that a 4th act wasrequired - just a first, second and third. Dear Hollywood, is thisasking too much?

Great Concept; Could Have Been Better

I feel like I have said "Great Concept; Could Have Been Better" about alot of horror movies. I think one of the biggest mistakes horror moviewriters & directors make is actually "trying" to be scary. Some of thecreepiest movies out there were more concerned with a spooky tale thangoing for the "boo" factor. Like another reviewer said, this movie hada great set up: a creepy location with the idea that the windows anddoors were covered and locked because they were working on moving outof a (summer home?) they no longer used. They picked a hottie for themain character and as far as her role she did a great job. Though someof the filming was interesting (like when she gets out of the house &runs as far away from the house as she can)I hated the scenes wherethey blurred the peripheral or completely blacked out the screen in thedark (that has a way of pulling you right out of the film & making youagain aware that you're just in y our living room watching a movie). Ienjoyed the twist, although once you were aware of it, the movie almosthad nowhere to go after that & the ending was rocky.

Excellent Horror

I have just returned from the theatre after seeing Silent House. I mustsay it is without a doubt one of the best horror movies i have seenthis year. I am really quite confused with all these badreviews.Previously seeing Elizabeth Olzen in Martha Marcey MayMarlene,i am not surprised to find out how good an acting performanceshe portrayed in this movie. Alongside with the scary shots and creepyscenery,i seriously would give this a much higher rating thanParanormal Activity. Don't even get me started on what i honestly thinkis one of the best twists i'v seen in a long time. I know this moviestarts of a little slow but everyone should give it a fair chance.Watchit to the end,the ending is fantastic. A well deserved 9 out of 10.

Elizabeth Olsen, the only reason you can bear this clichéd horror

Silent House – TRASH IT/CATCH IT (for Elizabeth Olsen) (C+) SilentHouse is kind of a found-footage movie about a young girl in "WhiteTank Top" returning to her old house which triggers her abusive andhorrible childhood. Trapped between the reality and illusion she has tosave her life. I truly want to love Silent House so badly mostlybecause of incredible Elizabeth Olsen. But sadly the movie is tooclichéd and too much predictable and tedious towards end that it'sreally hard to appreciate its substance. Even though it's a remake ofUruguay "La casa muda" but the inspiration has to be coming from Frenchsensation "High Tension". The similarities between these two movies areobvious. Elizabeth Olsen delivers another finest performance afterdisturbing "Martha Mary May Marlene". She is truly a revelation and whoknew Olsen twins' younger sister will be so talented? Running throughthe house in one dress, in one house in same situation defiantlyrequires brilliance and Elizabeth Olsen doesn't disappoint. On thewhole, Elizabeth Olsen is the only reason anyone can go through thismovie otherwise it's just another found-footage movie on the name ofhorror.
