Plot Summary:
Enzo and Jacques have known each other for a long time. Their friendship started in their childhood days in the Mediterranean. They were not real friends in these days, but there was something they both loved and used to do the whole day long diving. One day Jacques father, who was a diver too, died in the Mediterranean sea. After that incident Enzo and Jacques lost contact. After several years, Enzo and Jacques had grown up, Johanna, a young clerk in a security office, has to go to Peru. There she meets Jacques who works for a group of scientists. He dives for some minutes into ice-cold water and the scientists monitor his physical state that is more like a dolphins than a humans. Johanna can not believe what she sees and gets very interested in Jacques but shes unable to get acquainted with him. Some weeks later, back in her office, she notices a championship for divers that is supposed to take place in Taormina, Italy. In order to see Jacques again she makes up a story so the firm sends her to Italy for business purposes. In Taormina there is also Enzo, the reigning diving world champion. He knows that only Jacques can challenge and probably beat him. This time Johanna and Jacques get closer, but Jacques, being more a dolphin than a man, can not really commit and his rivalry with Enzo pushes both men into dangerous territory...

The Original Cut.The two hour original American cut of this film is much better thanthe extended DVD version. Most of the changes weakened thefilm. I am searching for the original version on DVD - it is one ofmy favorite films. Extremely beautiful, poetic, and charming. Direction is excellent, acting is great, and the story isenjoyable. |

One of my all time favorites...I first saw this movie when it came out in the theaters...I was around 11 and I loved it from the start and I still love it. I can watch it a hundred times (I probably have) and still watch it again! Now some of that can be from my crush on Jean Marc Barr and my liking Jean Reno a lot, but I think it's a sweet movie. Actually, one time I rented the movie on DVD and I noticed they had changed the ending....instead of a sad ending, they made it a happy ending.... I don't know which I like better....But that doesn't matter. It's a great movie and I highly recommend seeing it if you're into stuff like this. A sweet romantic movie. |

I'm going to sink this movie deep in the sea so no one else has to watch itThis movie was so horrible I just have to vent my anger at havingwasted more than two hours of my life on this cheesy, pointless movie.First I'll tackle the love story. You've got this really annoying broadfrom NYC who ends up meeting this diver dude. He's pretty hot so ofcourse all of a sudden she's madly in love. Are you kidding me? The guyobviously has an IQ of about 50 but the dumb broad is madly in love. She's obviously and idiot, and the diver can barely put a sentencetogether in any language so it's obvious he's a moron. So she goes backto the city and obsesses about this dude she barely even spoke to, somuch that she defrauds her boss who seems like a good enough dude to gosee him in Italy. So she ends up losing her job and even opens herselfto criminal fraud charges just to see this hot Italian guy cause she'shorny. Right. Then the main diver dude and his retarded friend competein diving, and this simple scene that should last about 15 minutes goeson and on for most of the rest of the movie, and the dumb broad fallsdeeper and deeper in love with the guy even though he's a completemoron who bangs her and then refuses to talk to her as much as ispossible. So of course you know either him or his friend are going todie diving. His friend goes down too far, comes up, wakes up enough tobeg his friend to take him back down instead of have the doctorsstanding right by try to save him. Completely retarded. Then of coursethe b**ch gets knocked up, and he feels the need to commit suicideinstead of deal with his pregnant woman. Which is of course not AT ALLselfish or anything. What a great guy. But the woman helps him do itanyways because they're both really stupid people. One can only hopeshe aborts the baby because people this stupid shouldn't even beallowed to have kids. So this is a stupid and pointless movie and Ifail to comprehend how anyone could possibly like this piece of crap. The characters are so stupid and pathetic you really just wish a bigmissile will hit Sicily and wipe them all out. That's the stuff dreamsare made of. |

Magnifico! This movie is a wonderful sleeper (and a keeper)! Stunning cinematography, a great musical score, beautiful french men (Reno and Bar), intriguing storyline, unencumbered dialogue, etc. This is truly one of my favorite movies and I am sorry to see that it is unavailable for purchase! Here's hoping it will be available again soon (in WIDESCREEN). |

Man seeks truth and knowledge in the big blue. The cinematography is stunning. The movie envelops you in breathtaking diving sequences in Sicily and the Greek Islands to name a couple of locations. The movie also will encourage you to travel to the Island of Sicily and eat linguine vongole. The eating sequence filmed off the coast of Sicily will make you hungry. The movie also addresses the issue of world class athletes pushing themselves to the limit and risking their lives in the process. Staring mortality in the face, does man recognize the limit of his boundary at the end of a free fall dive and safely ascend to the surface to breathe oxygen or does man dare to venture forth beyond the boundaries of life with the eternal descent into the big blue? Perhaps only the dolphin can answer this question. The acting in the movie is first rate and so is the direction. I wish America saw more of Jean-Marc Barr. I have been a fan of Jean Reno since this film. Rosanna Arquette is a good actress. This film is highly entertaining. Where is the extended widescreen version transfer of the film to DVD? |

what's so great about that film?So many people are just fanatic about that film. I've seen it yesterdayfor the first time. Sorry, but I can't see the point out of it. There are two maniac twisting each other up about being better than theother. Two egocentric, who just care about them selves and don'trealize what's going on around them. I expected more pictures about the Big Blue (Ocean), not just theirchampionship circles. Compared to the Movie Deep Blue, The Big Bluejust says nothing about the Ocean Life.Did the Director intend to show something about free diving, or aboutthe life in the Ocean? But why was it necessary to put on kind of alove story? Just to attract more interested? |

Missed it really much !Impressive story, beautiful scenery and top acting..... I was totatlly immerged into the ocean of Luc Besson's talent. Too many feelings raised upon it. You smile, you cry and you fall into deep mediation... These feelings hold me through out the hours. Even after since I saw it in 1997 in Hong Kong, the memories and feels are still vivid. Enjoying a movie is so compatible to your personal experience in real life. The deep obsession to the ocean, pursuit of identity and family, is the best element in the film..... all of these almost could not be told by words.... (Rosanna Arquette looks very much alike with the dolphins!) |

Poetry in BlueThis film is in 'the most beautiful' category of the films i've seen. It is not about a contest, a personal success or just dramatical story. It is about passion, poetry and deepest in ourselves. It is what a film should be: a sensual experience of that magic in our&other selves. The characters, especially women, are said to be 'tin' in words; but they are what some of us really are. It is not necessary to agree with other people, in fact, it deprieves one of his/her self if attempted. For those that like watching likeable, developing, 'better man' characters in a film, this one won't do. It is like life of passion, not life of fitting in. |

Wrong Music ScoreThis review is from: Le Grand Blue: The Big Blue (Director's Cut) (DVD) I bought the Korean dub because I was under the impression it had the original 1988 US theatrical release music score by Bill Conti- nada. This version contains the same music score by Eric Serra that is on all the rereleased directors cut versions of the film. If you ever get a chance to see the original US release which was shortened and given a new musical score you will be delighted at the results. There is a reason they decided to do this; because in America we know how to make movies. The directors cut is awful- it distorts the character development and the musical score by Eric Serra is dreadful. It's worth mentioning that the video quality is prettty poor also. Total waste of money |

Neilen TolmayThere is only one way to describe Luc Besson's work and that is AMAZING! This movie is a must have for any scuba / deep water diving enthusiast!A brilliant movie that you will come to love as you will never forget the amazing scenery, under water shots, friendship and camaraderie.Buy it - this is a must for any DVD collection as you will just want to watch this again and again to wish you were there! |

The original version is much betterThe original 119 minute version of The Big Blue featuring the superb soundtrack by Bill Conti is my favorite film of all time. After purchasing Bessons Director's cut DVD (the only DVD version available) I found that it greatly slows the pace of the movie while adding very little story. The new accompanying musical score by Eric Sierra is bland and combined with the different ending, the feel of the original film is destroyed. I regret buying this DVD. |

my favorite movie besides The English Patient***SPOILERS*** ***SPOILERS***My heart drowned together with Jacques when he left go of the rope anddisappeared following the dolphin deep in the sea. And i couldn't helpthinking for many days what did he want to pursue with the little dolphin. Finally a friend told me that is FREEDOM. But i am still puzzled, why amanmust die if he want freedom.Whereas i am not trying to talk about the abstruse philosophy here, becausethere are too many easy and delighted plots to share in. For Example, whenEnzo got that ten thousand dollars, he firstly brushed his little raggedcarinto freshly red, and then sent his assistant to buy him a suit and a bighouse with garden for his mother... ...when Enzo placed his macaronihastilybefore Johanna as he heard that his mother was coming... ...when theJapanese fainted because of catatonia before his dive in the worldchampionship... ...when Jacques and Enzo got drunk and bet to drink underthe water... ...i couldn't help laughing loudly. Furthermore, thebeautifuland charming scenery in South-Europe impressed me deeply. And the director may also want to tell us "to fall in love" does not mean"to live together". Johanna is so much fed up with the boring life in NewYork, so it is easy to understand why she fell in love so quickly when shehad the first sight of Jacques, a mysterious and handsome young man.Jacques could accept Johanna's love, but he could not give all his life toher, because diving is the most important in his life, so he choose tofollow the dolphin, not Johanna at last.Anyway this is a pleasant movie to see except the heart-broken ending ofEnzo, Jacques and Johanna. |

Not as Magical as American VersionWhen I first saw the original US release over ten years ago, I fell in love with this movie. The story was excellent, the directing was great, and the cinematograghy was fantastic. The Big Blue became one of my all time favorite movies. I bought the VSH as soon as I could and had been anxiously awaiting a DVD version so I would have wide screen and crystal clear picture. After buying the DVD yesterday (release day), I took it home, suffered through what used to be a perfect movie, and now find myself wishing I could return it. Now I can't say I did not like this version - I did, and understand the story all too well now. Here though are the few things which are better in the DVD, followed by what is wrong with it. This most likely will include spoilers, so proceed at your own risk.Good things about the DVD include the wide screen, which is essential to movie viewing. The added footage from Jacque's childhood and the invitation from Enzo to compete against him should have been included in the US version. The fairy tail he tells Joanna also adds to further understanding the ending and the addition of other divers trying to beat Enzo and the oil rig dive are both comical. Now to the bad. For starters, Conti's score is far superior to Eric Scerra's. Conti gives a feeling of triumph mixed with a mystic feel. Also, in the DVD, Jacques is not an innocent in love with the sea. The bit about the baby also makes the DVD a tragedy while the ending in the US is open to debate as the whether or not Jacques lives. In either case, the US leaves you feeling that he has found peace. The DVD leaves you knowing he dies. Also, the old VHS was rated PG-13 and a nice movie for young kids, the DVD is R do to language that isn't needed and nudity.I re-watched my old VHS immediatly following the DVD to reclaim that good feeling I always get after watching the Big Blue. In summary, I liked a little of the exra footage, but I found most of it polluted the story and without Conti's music to lift you up I found the DVD to be an utter disappointment. Find the old VHS and buy that instead. |

Beautiful filmAnyone expecting an action film similar to Besson's later films La FemmeNikita, Leon (aka The Professional), The Fifth Element, or Joan of Arc (akaThe Messenger) is bound to be dissapointed, but this is still requiredviewing for anyone interested in the films of Luc Besson (well, actually,I'd say all of his films are). I just love Besson's visual style, hereaided by Carlo Varini's excellent cinematography. From La Femme Nikita on,Besson would use Thierry Arbogast as his DP. Some incredible locationshooting and underwater photography, the diving scenes of the two maincharacters are simply stunning. I wonder what kind of training these actorshad to go through. Jean Reno, one of my favorite actors, gives a greatperformance, as always. Overall great film. Definately try and find theoriginal European version, the American version is missing about 40 minutes, has different music (Eric Serra's music is a major component in Besson'sfilms, changing it would be like replacing the Ennio Morricone score for aSergio Leone film or the Bernard Herrmann score for an Alfred Hitchcockfilm), and has a more Hollywood-like ending. Also definately try and findit letterboxed, some films are watchable pan and scanned, this is not one ofthem. |

One of the most beautiful films ever made. What a gorgeous movie this is. It has become a cult classic in Europe and I wish it could be rereleased in the longer widescreen version. If anyone has a PAL compatable vcr, I would be happy to lend it to you. Jean marc barr is just about perfect. If anyone wants to discuss further, feel free to write. |
