Four high school students could have made a better movie

The plot is not bad, but the movie is poorly made, with no more than aseries of disjointed scenes most of which defying common sense. Whilebravery is an important theme in this movie, most of the charactersbehave more recklessly and foolishly than bravely. For example, thelead character Harry volunteers to be captured by the Sudanese,apparently to "save" his captured friend. The problem is that he goesin with no plan of escape whatsoever. Of course, his supernaturalguardian angel, the Sudanese warrior, helps Harry to escape -- apredictable plot. But could Harry have predicted that? The Sudanesewarrior is depicted to be the most fearless and the most loyalcharacter -- overshadowing brainless British lieutenants and leadingcharacters. I give 2 out of 10. Not worth anybody's time.

"THE FOUR FEATHERS" is FIVE-STARS

What a great movie ! I took my 12 year old son to see this movie, and itwaswithout regret. It was so much of what I like in a movie: a noble moralimperative and a redemptive dynamic.Add lots of action and a compelling romance, and you got a great movie. Ifyou liked Mel Gibson in the Patriot, you'd like Four Feathers.10/10.

This Rendition offers an exceptional interpretation which clearly surpasses all previous movies of the same title and we found it to be a most absorbing and moving story. This is due to the extraordinary talent of Heath Ledger.

Great Movie!

A good historical romp

The Four Feathers won't be considered a great film when history isthrough with it, but the beauty and epic nature of the film shouldstill be admired. Much like many other films very similar to it (Masterand Commander, Last Samurai and Hero) the landscape and sets are themajor reasons to watch the film.While the historical context in this film was weeded out by politicalcorrectness, one cannot deny the work and talent that was put into thisfilm. Heath Ledger and Wes Bently were both good in this film, showingsome potential as great actors in roles that were rather hard to fill.However, Kate Hudson once again showed she has no acting ability tospeak of, causing me to convulse every time she vomited a word out hermouth.While other remake of this film will be deemed better in regards tohistorical accuracy and possibly from an acting standpoint, but thisfilm easily has them beat in the cinematography department.

could have been better

The story is about a young handsome British officer and gentleman who hassome objection against the next colonial war to be fought. His friends andhis fiancee now give him a white feather as sign of his cowardice. But then,o marvel, he hears about the fate of his comrades somewhere in the Sudan,and he doubles over there to save them. This does not succeed totally, buthe manages to regain his self confidence and overcome his cowardice. He alsofinds time to escape from imprisonment by the Madhi followers. One by one hereturns the white feathers to the original presenters and in the end, healso gets his fiancee back so things are good again. It is clear he won, andthe that the guys who did their duty lost. What could have been a nice movie about some colonial conflict depictedagainst the late 19th century's society gets bogged down in a silly loveaffair. Acting is quite good, but it seems that the story has been made abit subordinate to the main characters and their deeper psychologicalthingies. It would have been nice when the director had dared to make a realcolonial warfare movie, which is rather not-done these days I think, insteadof a politically correct one like this: colonial warfare is bad, but goingthere and saving your comrades is good. It is easy to say this 100+ yearsafter the events happened. All in all, 5 out of 10. I had expectedmore.

Highly under-rated movie

I have enjoyed watching this DVD immensely. The movie needs to be watched without thinking about the previous versions or the book. Do not watch it with a preconceived notion as to what the movie should or shouldn't be. Take it for what it is. A movie that has a heart felt story that is presented with superb acting. True there are holes in the story. True, the ideas are not what we believe today (but most historical movies don't have the same values as we have today) But look past these ideas and just breath in the fine performances and the story. Ledger proved to me he was a great actor. Pay close attention to Ledger in the the scenes with Abuu in the prison, Jack in the desert and at the end, and Ethne in the church. The whole story is told in his expressions and his eyes. Buy this DVD and watch it, not once, but several times. The first time watching Four Feathers was intense, but the more I watch it, the more I love it. And also watch it with the director speaking - it gives a whole new light on the story. And just as an added note -- my 11 year old son has watched this with me several times. He not only gets the story and understands it but he asks to watch it. He also has commented on the fact that he can't understand why people don't like Four Feathers. Out of the mouths of children I suppose.

Great movie

A Good But Flawed Movie

Four Feathers is a good movie and will appeal to anyone who likes the "British Army take on the bad guys" type of movie. Heath Ledger stars as "Harry" the soldier who becomes too scared to fight for his country, receiving 4 feathers as a sign of cowardice from his friends and fiance in return. Well done flick, but the scene where Ledger's character gets scared and leaves the army doesn't make any sense; ditto for his solo journey to rescue his doomed comerades. Why doesn't he want to fight? What happens inside him to allow himself to overcome his inner demons? The book probably provided the answer, but movie audiences don't know and that's the big flaw. Everything else is well done, though, making it worth watching.

The struggle of regaining self-respect and self-worth...

Four feathers is an adventurous story that takes place in the British colony Sudan during the end of the 1800s, which offers both drama and tragedy as war does for all affected parties.

BAD, JUST FLAT OUT BAD

WHEN I FIRST saw the previews for this, i was dying to see it, but i didnt get the chance to untill it came out on video. i rushed into the movie store, and hurried to find "the four feathers" starring Heath Ledger (The Patriot, A Knight's Tale).... this movie turned out to be the biggest waste of time ever. i blew off 2 hours and 10 minutes to watch something that calling "dirt" would be disgracing dirt itself. hollywood needs to learn that they cant put a war story and a love story in the same movie. it just doesnt work. they did it in Pearl Harbor, and ruined that too. I was hoping for some great action scenes to make up for the horrible story line, but again, i was dissapointed. i thought about stopping the movie with a half hour left, but i hoped that something would happen that would make me forget about everything that went wrong. NOPE. this movie was full of dissapointments. there were too many remakes, which killed the original. o no! a man was blinded because he rifle didnt fire correctly- that had to be the "bad" thing of the movie. although, hollywood did make an attempt to dig themselves out of the pit they were in- they showed dogs eating dead british soldiers. Hollywood fell into a bottomless pit.

Appreciate this film for what it is supposed to be!

This review is from: The Four Feathers (DVD) I am very surprised at the number of negative comments about this film. My wife and I both loved it. We found the action scenes and cinematography to both be exceptional. I agree with the criticism that the retreat of the British troops to "form a square" seemed a bit out of kilter in that they seemed almost hopelessly surrounded but somehow escaped. To us, however, this was a small blemish on very believeable action sequences and a very entertaining story. I have seen the 1939 version several times and enjoyed it, but this was much better to me. Those who seem to have a problem with this movie seem to have standards few historical action films would meet. Perhaps they just don't enjoy the genre. I happen to enjoy films such as the Daniel Day-Lewis version of The Last of the Mohicans, The Patriot, etc. If you enjoy those type films, you will almost certainly enjoy this one. If you don't, you won't. This film is not totally true to the book. So what? It's a darn good movie! Just relax, be transported back to the heyday of the British Empire and enjoy a good historical action film with a love story and beautiful action scenes and suspense.

Great story about commitment

One of Heath Ledger's best performances. Sweet and moving and certainly thought provoking about loyalty, friendship. love and forgiveness. Compelling visuals and unspoken questions about war in general and what it asks of young men. It's on my keeper list for sure.

Read a history book before you make a movie...

This film has very little to do with the novel on which it claims to bebased. Historically it is highly inaccurate. To take one example of agoodmany, no British soldier wore a red jacket on active service in 1898. Thelast time the British Army wore red in action was in 1885 & it wasunusualthen. The Mahdist ansar became a very nasty type fanatic & killed many,manythousands of their own people.This is much the worst of an often remade story.

Four Feathers Short

"The Four Feathers", directed by Shekhar Kapur is the sixth filmversion of the classic novel by A. E. W. Mason. The many reviews ofthis film can be grouped into two prominent points of view. One half ofthe reviewers rated the film based on the technical aspects (such ashow well this movie portrayed actual history, accuracy to the book andhow well it reenacted Mason's ideas). The other group reviewed thisfilm from simply an entertainment point of view and rated it on howmuch they enjoyed it. The group that looked at the movie from atechnical point of view, disliked it. Those that ignored the technicalaspects seemed to be happily entertained. From a technical point of view, I feel that Kate Hudson was anunfortunate choice of actress for this character. She didn't have theright personality and mannerisms to fit the role and seemed too"American" for the role of this English lady. Also I believe that thefilm did not spend enough time developing the characters. This made ithard for me to understand their decisions and empathize with theirfeelings.I really enjoyed the settings in this film and the beauty of the shots.Although there were some lulls in the pace, the storyline kept a decenttempo. I had the feeling that some sections had too much of amelodramatic feel. The action sequences were quite exiting and thestory itself was entertaining but did not have much depth.I agree with the arguments made by both sides. It would have been niceif the characters had been more developed, if some of the scenes hadbeen cut a bit shorter and, if possible, some of the melodrama removed.I was happy with how it was beautifully filmed. Overall I enjoyed this film and I would recommend it to those who arelooking for simple, unchallenging entertainment.

Poor, must do better

The Four Feathers was written in 1902 by A. Mason and is a classicread.A. E. W. Mason (1865-1948) was a best-selling English romantic novelistand author of tales of exotic adventure.The story tells the tale about the adventures of a British army officer(Harry Feversham) and how he endeavors to overcome the false label of"coward".The 2002 film version does little to measure up to this classic book.The screen performances are poor. If you have the time to watch amovie, my best advice is go and find a copy of the 1929 film version.Famous actors, brilliant acting and film making at its best!

movie is not long enough

First let me say that anyone who thinks the Four Feathers (2002) is too long or too boring should just stick to MTV or Michael Bay films. If anything the film is too short. It doesn't take a genius to see the huge continuity problems in the editing (SEVERAL major plot points are wrapped up in seconds each time, and several others are obviously missing). I've read elsewhere that Kapur was forced to edit the film down from three hours plus. No doubt this was that idiot Harvey Weinstein's doing. I can't understand why he can't see how many films he's ruined by hacking them to bits (including every martial arts import he's ever released). NONETHELESS, I did marginally like the film. Still, I couldn't appreciate it as an epic at this length. This film desparately needs that extra hour of footage restored to it. SOOOO Harvey, when is it gonna happen...........

Bad, bad Kate

Although this movie felt too long, I enjoyed Heath Ledger and Wes Bentley's performances. Kate Hudson, however, was terrible. Her character was so uninspiring that it was impossible to believe that either of these men would have the strong feelings for her that the story hinged on.Kate Hudson is the next Ashley Judd, and I don't mean that as a compliment.

Wes And Heath Make The Film

The Four Feathers was a good movie, but not Heath Ledger's best. Theactingwas well done by all, but I must say the whole movie was driven by WesBentley's amazing performance. The story was good, but a little slow inparts. Comparing this movie to other epic flims of similar topics I wouldsay this one was great, but not the best. It was worth the price ofadmission.
